Objectives
This course aims to develop capacities to conceive, project and handle systems based on microprocessors and microcontrollers (both in what the software and the support hardware are concerned). Furthermore, we aim the development of concepts, the acquisition of knowledge, methods and techniques applied to the constitutive elements of the microcomputers systems for embedded applications. With the knowledge acquired in this course, the students must be able to develop systems based on microprocessors or microcontrollers, involving the project of input/output interface units, memory units and units of communication with the exterior. They must also know how to develop software both in assembly and in C language.

Teaching methods and learning activities
This course will be taught with oral expositions in theoretical classes (two classes/week, lasting 1h 30m each) that may include the solution of exercises, in order to consolidate the notions presented. Practical classes take plane in the laboratory and are a significant experimental component. The classes will be organized in work groups of 2/3 elements. Besides the application and consolidation exercises, each group will develop a mini-project (hardware and software) based on a general-use microcontroller (AVR). There will be a total of three practical assignments. Each of these must generate a written report. We will also suggest three homework assignments.

Eligibility for exams
The students must attend at least 75% of practical classes and obtain a positive result on the practical component.
Calculation formula of final grade
- written evaluation 30% + practical evaluation 60% + homework 10%
- The students must have a positive evaluation in all the evaluation components (written and practical components)
- When there is a difference of more than 4 marks between the classification of the written component and the practical component (on a 0-20 scale), the higher result will be adjusted so that the difference is of 4 marks.
Examinations or Special Assignments
- Three evaluation items in theoretical classes
- Three practical laboratory assignments and the delivery of the report
- Three homework assignments
