Objectives

a) To present a detailed description of the basic concepts of Classic Mechanics and Thermodynamics with a special emphasis on the most essential aspects, trying to develop intuition and reasoning;
b) To introduce the necessary mathematical tools;
c) To develop the ability to apply mathematics to problems of the real world of physics and engineering;
d) To include examples of application in order to show the results

Students who successfully complete this course will:
-be capable of explaining basic physic phenomena in two different areas of Physics using appropriate vocabulary: Classic Mechanics and Thermodynamics;
- be capable of using the laws of physics to calculate physical quantity;
- be capable of explaining how some concepts explain everyday life situations and their application in engineering;
- be capable of working in a team, solving problems.

Teaching methods and learning activities

- THEORETICAL classes will be based on the presentation, discussion and problem solving of the themes of the course;
- THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL classes are divided into two parts:
- First part of the class: The professor presents the themes of the course and promotes discussion and problem solving
- Second part of the class: Problem solving by the students

Eligibility for exams

Students are not admitted to exams if they do not achieve a minimum grade of 4 out of 9 in the continuous assessment component.
Students will not be admitted to exams (even if they have a passing grade in the continuous assessment component) if:
- they do not have a special status or attended to the course in previous years;
- they skipped more classes than allowed (25% of the practical-theoretical classes)

It will take place twelve theoretical-practical classes, so students can skip the maximum of three classes.

IMPORTANT: STUDENTS HAVE TO ACHIEVE A MINIMUM GRADE OF 8 OUT OF 20 TO COMPLETE THE COURSE.

- Students, who attended to the course in previous years, do not need to attend classes. However, students can opt to take the continuous assessment component, which is recommendable, yet irreversible.
- Students with a special status (working students, military personnel) do not need to take the continuous assessment component. Their assessment will be based on a final exam. However, students can opt to take the continuous assessment component, which is irreversible.


Students who attend classes in previous years:
- Do not need to attend classes, if they do not want to. IN THIS CASE, THEY SHOULD NOT ENROLL IN THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL CLASSES.
- Can opt to take the continuous assessment component, which is an irreversible decision.

Working students, military personnel….
- They only need to attend to the final exam, which will worth 20 values. IN THIS CASE, THEY SHOULD NOT ENROLL IN THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL CLASSES.
- They can opt to take the continuous assessment component, which is an irreversible decision.

Calculation formula of final grade

1- NEW STUDENTS

FM = FE + CA

FM (0-20) – Final Mark
FE (0-11) - Final Exam
CA (0-9)- Continuous Assessment: two evaluations: (1) a quizz of multiple choice-ten questions-and a problem of Classical Mechanics and (2) a problem of Thermodynamics

Note:
- Final exam is worth 55, 0% of the Final Mark (11 values), while continuous assessment is worth 45, 0% (9 values).
- STUDENTS HAVE TO ACHIEVE A MINIMUM GRADE OF 8 OUT OF 20 IN THE FINAL EXAM TO COMPLETE THE COURSE.
- In one of the theoretical-practical classes students will have to do a quiz of multiple choice and to solve a problem on Classical Mechanics (duration 1h30m), while in another theoretical-practical class, the students will have to solve a Thermodynamics problem (duration of 45 m). This component is worth 9 values (6 values per quiz+problem on Classical Mechanics + 3 values on the problem related to Thermodynamics).


2- STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED TO THE COURSE IN PREVIOUS YEARS

FM= Final Mark (0-20)
FE= Final Exam (0-11)
CA- Continuous Assessment mark (0-9)

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT:

Quiz of multiple choice (Q):
- In one of the theoretical-practical classes students will have to do a quiz with ten questions, which will last about 45 minutes. The quizz will be followed by a problem, which will last about 45 minutes. Both the quizz and the problem will be about Classical Mechanics.

Final Exam (FE):
i) students are not allowed to use calculating machines
ii) students are allowed to use a form

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

They only need to attend to the final exam, which will worth 20 values. IN THIS CASE, THEY SHOULD NOT ENROLL IN THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL CLASSES.
Students can opt to take the continuous assessment component, which is an irreversible decision.

Classification improvement

Students can improve their mark at recurso season. However, their continuous assessment grade will be the same.
