Objectives
To gain advanced knowledge concerning the main solar technologies, both thermal and photovoltaic. To be able to analyse, calculate and design thermal and PV systems, as well as perform their economic analysis (cost-benefit analysis).
Program
• Solar resources: solar radiation and its measurement; estimation of incident solar radiation on inclined surfaces: types of models.
• Solar thermal systems: types, design and analysis of the long term performance; systems with multiple and single pass, with or without storage.
• Calculation methods for solar cooling and co-generation thermal systems.
• Economic analysis of solar thermal systems.
• Photovoltaic (PV) solar collectors: cells, modules and their characteristics; manufacturing techniques.
• PV systems: components and characteristics (storage, regulation, conversion, protection and maintenance).
• Connection of PV systems to the electrical grid and design of isolated systems.
• Economic analysis of PV systems.
Teaching methods and learning activities
Presentation of subjects in theoretical classes and presentation of practical examples.
