Objectives

The general goal of this course may be considered to be the first project of the resistant structures of a building made by the students.
This goal requires the presentation of an arquitectural project of a building (one for each group of two, three students maximum), that usually is under construction (therefore a real case) and the students must deliver by the end of the semester the design of the resistant structures of that building. In order to do this, the theorectic classes provide the knowledge on that areas, while the practical classes are for questions or eventual problems that may occur during the design creation. The students have acces to automatic calculation programmes that provide simillar conditions to those they will experiment on real life works after the conclusion of the degree, and they are obliged to present a full report of the work done and the drawings of the resistant structures of that building, so that design may be executed.
During the realisation of the project there will be visits to the construction works that are being executed.


Program

Introduction. Goal and course extent.
Structural conception. General considerations; structural systems; different structural elements; construction materials; building conception criteria; structural designs project; possible pathologies due to a bad structural conception; examples of buildings real problems – slides; some practical examples.


Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of acetats of theorectical concepts and slides of construction works. Providing of automatic calculation programmes for the building structural analysis.
Visitation of construction sites and discussion of practical cases.
