Objectives

It is unquestionable that the masonry walls play an excellent role in the traditional construction, previous to the technology of armed concret, as well as in the modern construction that we carry through today. This relevance results, of the economics importance of this component that we know to place itself in about 12% and 18% of the total investment in buildings, as well as of the decurrent functional importance of the functions played for the walls and of the notoriety of the same ones while component where they reveal many of the deriving anomalies of behavior problems, of the proper wall and of other constructive elements that are related to it. The relevance just mentioned, in general does not have proportional treatment to the care that is given to the conception and execution of these constructive elements on the part of some intervening professionals in the act of constructing. Some of the causes that are in the origin of this fact are due to the superficial and insufficient exploration of the subject of masonries in the degrees of Engineering and Architecture.
The main objectives of the course are:
- to sensetize the future civil engineers for the questions related with a more technical supported conception and execution of the walls having for base masonries, aiming at one better performance;
- to endow the pupils with models and modern tools that allow them to evaluate the mechanical behavior of the walls, resistant or with fulfilling, similar to the used in other structural solutions and materials and even to conceive buildings in resistant masonries;
- not only to direct the interest of deepening the knowledge in this area for new constructions, but also for the rehabilitation of existing, traditional or more recent constructions.
This course is structuralized in a way to allow the pupils a gradual adaptation to its content, enclosing relative introductory aspects to the subject to the technological evolution of these constructions, to the terminological aspects and the applicable requirements to the walls, as well as detailed study of the constituent materials and the masonry structures, including the mechanical aspects of conception and verification of stability. The technological aspects also make part of the course, pathology and rehabilitation of constructions in masonry. .

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching procedure of this course is based on the search of a relation establishment between the different treated themes, in a way to promote a critical view of the subjects, making it easier for the students to have an integrated view and assimilation. This joint between themes is even more effective in the subjects treated in the theoretical and practical parts. In the theoretical presentation it is intended to combine the exposition of the subjects with equationing of the problems to solve and with the form as the same ones can be investigated and be treated. In this context it is always looked to follow the theoretical exposition with examples of concrete situations and, where possible, of true cases of real workmanships. The bibliography consultation and research, catalogues and small farms of the InterNet, also are stimulated, as a way to stimulate the inquiry and severity spirit. In one of the lessons there is a space of laboratorial demonstration of the aspects associated to the materials and the masonry structures. In the most practical parts it is looked to guide the pupils to the formulation and resolution of problems and to the clarification of doubts related with the considered works. For that effect, are considered some exercises and works with changeable degrees of difficulty that compel the pupils to a deepening and domain of the substances presented in the theoretical lessons. The exercises happen on the chapters where it is possible to make applications. The exercises are presented as sheets in the beginning of each lesson and the pupils have to solve them during the lesson. In addition to these exercises two more works are presented. The first work, to take the handle during the lessons, is relative to a building in structural masonry that the pupils have that to conceive and to dimensionate. This work compels them to deal with multiples domains beyond the strict aspects relative to the structures masonry, appointedly foundations and structures of buildings, technologies and behaviour of the constructions, drawing of construction, etc. The second work, optional, is a research work on a set of subjects presented every year. The pupil, if he is interested, chooses a subject or even considers a variant work inside of the proposed subjects, investigates the subject with orientation of the professor and presents in the end of the year an essay on that subject.
