Objectives

1. General objectives:

To know the role of the University of Porto as a promoter of urban development and to evaluate, based on that knowledge, the processes of expansion and modification in the locations of some university facilities (particularly concerning the growth of the Asprela pole).

2. Specific objectives/main tasks:

To carry out a bibliographical research on the relationships between cities and universities.

To define and analyse the relative importance of the university as a promoter of spatial transformation, gathering information on the building of university facilities and comparing it with other important real estate investments.

To identify the changes – current, foreseen or possible – associated with the consolidation of the Asprela pole (based on the observation of the surrounding area and on the gathering of information concerning the projects already in progress)

To identify the main institutions involved in this development process.

3. Rules for the general layout of the work:

The subject of the various works is the same. However, it might be useful to carry out a distribution of tasks for the development of field works. This implies a separate period of time, in the beginning of each class, in which students can share with each other the information they gathered.

Each group includes two students and must hand over a final report.

Program

A – Presentation and general discussion of the objectives and organization of the work.
B – Bibliographical research.
C – Discussion to synthesize bibliographical research (which can be subsequently deepened).
D – Discussion of the methodology of analysis of the influence of the university as a promoter of land development in the city of Porto.
E – Gathering and processing of information on the influence of the university as a promoter of land development.
F – Discussion of the methodology of analysis of the relationship between the Asprela pole and the surrounding territories.
G – Gathering and processing of information concerning the relationship between the Asprela pole and the surrounding territories: functional and institutional analysis.
H – Oral presentation of the work (which will be the basis for the elaboration of the final report).
* - Intermediate discussions (in class) of the results of field works.
