Objectives

The subject of the Pathology and Rehabilitation of Buildings has the following objectives to be achieved by the student:
– Acquiring technical and scientific knowledge in the field of humidity in construction, natural ventilation, building pathology of construction and rehabilitation of buildings;
– The elaboration of projects in this area, thus meeting regulatory demands and quality standards.

Program

Introduction
Moisture in construction: The problem with humidity in construction: Ways humidity manifests. Fundamental moisture transfer mechanisms. The various models of moisture transfer in porous media. The effect of humidity on construction materials. Humidity of Condensation: The condensation mechanism. Factors regulating condensation. Quantifying condensation. Criteria for designing the envelope so as to prevent condensation. Rising damp: Factors regulating rising damp. Design requirements. Techniques for treating rising damp. Humidity of infiltrations. Hygric properties of construction materials and for measuring humidity. Diagnosis of situations where moisture occurs.
Natural ventilation of buildings: Natural ventilation and comfort. Grounds for natural ventilation. Systems and requirements in various countries. Recommendations and devices for natural ventilation.
Pathology: Intervening elements and determining who is responsible. Pathologies of roofs, façades and floors. Case studies.
Rehabilitation of buildings: Methodology for elaborating rehabilitation projects. Technologies used for rehabilitating buildings. Case studies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

There are 2 theory classes a week, of the explanatory variety, with each class lasting around one hour. There is also one practical class a week, lasting 2 hours, where exercises are solved, assignments are done, and the matters addressed are discussed.
We seek to make sure the content of practical classes, whenever possible, is given in parallel with the theory classes.
During theory classes, overhead and PowerPoint are basically used as a kind of support for the exposition, which allows to better follow up on students and for them to visualize the content of the subject matter. Students have a class at the Building Physics Laboratory in order to come in contact with the equipment used for measuring temperature and humidity in construction materials and elements.
