Rui Calçada is a Full Professor (2014-) of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and the Dean of FEUP (2022-2026). He has been President, since its foundation (2021-), of the Scientific and Strategic Council of CCF-Centro de Competências Ferroviário (www.ccferroviario.com), FEUP representative on the Academia Permanent Advisory Group of ERRAC - European Rail Research Advisory Council (www.errac.org) and the FEUP representative on EURNEX - the EUropean rail Research Network of Excellence (www.eurnex.org).
He obtained the following academic qualifications: Degree in Civil Engineering from FEUP (1992); a Master's degree in Civil Engineering Structures from FEUP (1995); a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Porto (2003); and a Habilitation in Civil Engineering from the University of Porto (2013).
Rui Calçada was the Coordinator (2014-) of CSF–Centro de Saber da Ferrovia (www.fe.up.pt/csf), Head of the Civil Engineering Department of FEUP (2019-2022), Coordinator of the Structural Division of the Civil Engineering Department of FEUP (2015-2019), Coordinator of the Research Group LESE (2015-2022), Coordinator of the Thematic Line on Railway Infrastructures (2015-2022) and Member of the Management Board (2015-2022) of CONSTRUCT- Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction. He has been a member of the Board (2015-), since its foundation, of PFP - Plataforma Ferroviária Portuguesa (www.ferrovia.pt), He was also President (2020-2022) of the Strategic Council of PFP.
Rui Calçada was the Principal Investigator at FEUP of 11 research projects (Funders: European Commission-5; CCDRN-1; ANI-4; FCT-1) and a member of the team of 12 research projects (Funders: European Commission-1; ANI-1; FCT-10). He was involved in the supervision of 24 PhD thesis (15 as supervisor and 9 as co-supervisor). He was Director of the doctoral program iRail-Innovation in Railway Systems and Technologies, a partnership between the University of Porto, the University of Minho, and the University of São Paulo in Brazil.
His main fields of interest are advanced models for analysis of the train-infrastructure dynamic interaction; dynamic effects on bridges and transition zones; fatigue assessment of railway bridges; track-structure interaction; condition monitoring systems (wayside and on-board); advanced algorithms for condition assessment of the railway infrastructure.
Rui Calçada is the author of 323 documents indexed at SCOPUS, with an h-factor of 39, with 8447 citations.
Rui Calçada was also responsible for advanced consultancy works related to dynamic effects on bridges, transition zones, fatigue assessment of railway bridges, and track-structure interaction developed for Soares da Costa, EMEF, IP, OJSC Institute Giprostroymost, Metro do Porto, Mota-Engil, Engenharia e Construção, Sacyr-Somague, Viaponte, PCA and BERD.
He was invited to give several keynote lectures related to railway infrastructures at the following conferences: Jornadas Técnicas Ingeniería para Alta Velocidad, Spain, 2007; IBRACON 2011, Florianopolis, Brazil, 2011; IABMAS 2018 – Maintenance, Safety, Risk, Management and Life-Cycle Performance of Bridges, Melbourne, Australia, 2018; ART2018 – The 2nd Asian Conference on Railway Engineering and Transportation, Jeju, South Korea, 2018; ICRARE 2021 – International Conference on Recent Advances in Railway Engineering, Tehran, Iran, 2018; Jornadas Técnicas Ingeniería para Alta Velocidad, Cordoba, Spain, 2021.
In recognition of his contribution to knowledge generation, Rui Calçada received the following awards: Ferry Borges Award 2002, Ferry Borges Mention of Honour 2004; Ferry Borges Mention of Honour 2016; Ferry Borges Award 2022, awarded by APEE – Portuguese Association of Structural Engineering; Manby Prize 2004, awarded by ICE – Institution of Civil Engineers; Highly Commended Award winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2013, for an article published in the International Journal of Structural Integrity; Best Paper Award, awarded by the Scientific Commission of ISEV 2013 – 6th International Symposium on Environmental Vibration, Shanghai; Prize Robert Moskovic 2020, awarded by the European Society for Structural Integrity (ESIS).
