Master in Civil Engineering

InformationThe course information is being edited.
The Integrated Master in Civil Engineering has been awarded the international EUR-ACE quality label. This certifies MIEC as a high-quality programme which meets the international standards for professional engineering education at the masters level. [+ info]

The Integrated Master in Civil Engineering provides a solid educational framework, with a rich scientific background, which places firm emphasis on the interaction between theory and practice within the main Civil Engineering domains. The main objective is to prepare students so that, after completing the course, they can begin a professional career in practice or research in Civil Engineering or related fields. Profiting from the experience and tradition of a school founded in 1837, students can enjoy a modern campus, equipped with excellent laboratories and superb library facilities. Civil Engineers with an MSc degree from FEUP are able to deal professionally with a wide range of complex subjects and are prepared for playing a leading role in public and private organizations.

Who can apply

The Master in Civil Engineering is especially directed for candidates with a solid formation in mathematics and physics and an orientation for technological areas. An accurate training in areas of drawing and computation can also improve the integration into the course.

Objectives

The Master in Civil Engineering aims to graduate students capable to conceive, design and manage systems, structures and Civil Engineering works, applying update and appropriate methods of analysis, materials, equipment and processes, with respect for Ethics, Environment and the best interests of the Community. For this purpose, it provides:

- a solid education in basic sciences, particularly in Mathematics, Physics and Technical Drawing;

- a broad education in the main scientific and technical Civil Engineering domains, with a more focused treatment of the key formative aspects for each one of these domains;

- a specialization in one of the scientific and technical domains of Civil Engineering.

The structure of the study cycle consists in first four years constituting a common core and a fifth year with seven branches of specialization. In this last year, the first semester has specific curricular units of specialization and the second semester is devoted to the preparation of the thesis.

Exchange Programmes

The connection of FEUP to foreign universities through mobility programs (ERASMUS with several European universities and Program MOBILE with several Brazilian universities) has allowed the exchange of students, being possible that the curriculum for a semester (the second semester of the fourth year or the first semester of the fifth year) can be fully replaced by an equal period abroad.

A protocol between FEUP and the Ecole des Ponts - ParisTech (formerly École National des Ponts et Chaussées - ENPC), allows candidates, MIEC students, who are selected for this program to obtain a diploma of 2nd cycle simultaneously in two schools: the degree of "Ingénieur" by ENPC and degree of "Master" in Civil Engineering from FEUP (more information: Double Diploma).

Fields of Specialization

The final year of the course provides seven main areas of specialization: Building, Structures, Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Materials and Construction Processes, Territory Planning and Environment and Transport Infrastructures.

Professional Abilities

The learning outcomes were set to provide a solid education in basic sciences such as Mathematics, Physics and Drawing; a broad education in civil engineering sciences, namely Strength of Materials and Structures, Hydraulics, Physics and Technology of Constructions and Materials, Soil Mechanics and Territorial Planning; and, a principle of specialization in one of the major civil engineering domains: Building, Structures, Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Materials and Construction Processes, Territory Planning and Environment and Transport Infrastructures.

Employment Prospects

The main professional market for Masters in Civil Engineering at the public level comprises building and bridge construction, road and railway networks, hydropower and water infrastructures. In the private sector the main market is building construction, industrial systems and various infrastructures.
