Fields of Specialization

Focus areas include: the phenomenological understanding of physical, chemical and/or biological processes that affect the quality of any environmental compartment (surface or groundwater, atmosphere, subsoil and biota) or of the respective sub-compartment, as well as the introduction of new industrial practices (green engineering, ecology and industrial symbiosis, environmental nanotechnology) and the use of different forms of renewable energy; or the mitigation of environmental problems and policies related to water resources, sanitation, water supply and coastal environments, or climate change; among other topics that consider the transversality of the relationship between engineering and sustainability, and a methodology based on the concept of circular economy.

Employment Prospects

PhDs in Environmental Engineering by FEUP can promote scientific development and technological innovation in the field of Environmental Engineering, not only in higher education institutions and research centers, but also in public institutions and companies, whether in Portugal or abroad. It should be noted that, given the increasing importance of the environmental issues in terms of sustainability and competitiveness, it is crucial for companies staff to have more and more skilled human resources, that its productive activity accompany the rhythm of demand of modern society.

Information

The PhD in Environmental Engineering has a curricular component in the 1st year, which include semestral curricular units  of Inititation to Research and Seminars, and the annual Thesis Project curricular unit, which is carried out in person, developing research activity in FEUP’s laboratories, in which will be the future topic of the thesis. In the following years, the development of the thesis is exclusively on-site.

This doctoral program does not have its own grants. The Portuguese Scientific System awards research grants to national and foreign candidates, in a call that normally takes place in February of each year, and that requires a work plan and a supervisor from the institution.

If you want to apply for a scholarship, we suggest you contact one of the professors of the Doctoral Program, explaining your motivations and areas of interest. We recommend that you send your CV, indicating the average of the degree obtained, so that they can jointly find a doctoral topic and a supervisor to apply for the scholarship.

Although foreign students do not need recognition of a (master's) degree to enroll in the Doctoral Programs in Portugal, if they want to apply for doctoral scholarships it will be necessary to have the recognition. The information is available at:
