The Doctoral Program in Environmental Engineering (PDEA) aims at advanced training in areas of diagnosis, prevention and resolution of environmental problems, applying a multidisciplinary approach. PDEA students develop their doctoral theses in the various Departments of FEUP, promoting excellence in research and technological development, while acquiring transversal skills in communication, scientific ethics, innovation and entrepreneurship.

PhDs in Environmental Engineering by FEUP can promote scientific development and technological innovation in the field of Environmental Engineering, not only in higher education institutions and research centers, but also in public institutions and companies, whether in Portugal or abroad. It should be noted that, given the increasing importance of the environmental issues in terms of sustainability and competitiveness, it is crucial for companies staff to have more and more skilled human resources, that its productive activity accompany the rhythm of demand of modern society.
The PhD in Environmental Engineering has a curricular component in the 1st year, which include semestral curricular units of Inititation to Research and Seminars, and the annual Thesis Project curricular unit, which is carried out in person, developing research activity in FEUP’s laboratories, in which will be the future topic of the thesis. In the following years, the development of the thesis is exclusively on-site.
This doctoral program does not have its own grants. The Portuguese Scientific System awards research grants to national and foreign candidates, in a call that normally takes place in February of each year, and that requires a work plan and a supervisor from the institution.
If you want to apply for a scholarship, we suggest you contact one of the professors of the Doctoral Program, explaining your motivations and areas of interest. We recommend that you send your CV, indicating the average of the degree obtained, so that they can jointly find a doctoral topic and a supervisor to apply for the scholarship.
Although foreign students do not need recognition of a (master's) degree to enroll in the Doctoral Programs in Portugal, if they want to apply for doctoral scholarships it will be necessary to have the recognition. The information is available at:
