Introduction to railway engineering

SUMMER COURSE - APPLICATIONS UNTIL June 11, 2017 in Candidaturas de Ingresso

This summer course is intended to enable students, both national and foreign, knowledge in the area of ​​Railway Engineering to complete their academic training. The training unit will be taught in English.


Objetives:
- to identify different railway systems and track components;
- to interpret a railway geometric project;
- to design the structure of a conventional railway;
- to evaluate the geometrical track condition;
- to know the basic concepts of railway maintenance operations;
- to understand the dynamic behavior of rail systems;
- to know the basic principles of railway operational control.

Program:

This training unit provides participants with an introduction to Railway Engineering  systems and track componentes;

  1. Railway systems and track componentes;
  2. Railway projects and processes: an overview;
  3. Horizontal and vertical track geometry: parameter definition, specifications and interoperability;
  4. Track forces;
  5. Track structural design;
  6. Temperature effects in CWR rails;
  7. Geometric track quality assessment;
  8. Maintenance operations;
  9. Dynamic vehicle-track interaction;
  10. Rail operational control.
In the scope of the course, technical visits and cultural visits are included (locals subjected to confirmation):
- visit to the Metro of Porto;
- visit to São Bento Railway Station;
- visit to the Oporto Operational Command Center;
- visit to a railway vehicle workshop.
The course also includes a trip to the Douro region in a historical train.

Candidates
Students of engineering courses or graduated / masters in Engineering.

Conditions of access:
There are no specific conditions of access to the training course, except fluency in the English language.
The ranking of the candidates is done from the analysis of the curriculum.
The criteria of selection consider:
- the number of credits obtained in engineering study cycles (50%);
- the final classification obtained in the course of engineering or the average grade of the courses attended (50%).

Credits: 2 ECTS

Duration:
54 hours (34 contact hours)

Dates:
3 to 8 july  2017.

Schedule: 3, 4 and 6 july from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.;  5 july from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. 7 july from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., 8 july (full day, schedule to be defined depending on the timetables of the historic train).

Local: FEUP

Participants: 12 - 15 (maximum)

Cost: ¤ 650 (This amount includes the certificate, lunches, coffee breaks, travel for technical visits and travel by historical train). 

Possibility of accommodation in a university residence (subjected to availability), from 28 to 32 Eur / night (see SASUP).

The course "Introduction to Railway Engineering" aims to provide students with knowledge on Railway Engineering, concerning:

 - track systems and track components; 
- track geometry; 
- geometric condition of the track;
- railway maintenance operations; 
- dynamic behavior of railway systems;
 - railway operational control;

 through face-to-face sessions and technical visits.

Information

The course "Introduction to Railway Engineering" considers face-to-face sessions, lectures, guided reading, individual research and technical and cultural visits, for motivating students in class, extending knowledge and developing skils. The course will be taught in English.

 

The evaluation is done through a written test to be carried out in an asynchronous  session (Moodle).
