The First Cycle Degree in Materials Engineering (LiEMAT) aims to provide graduates with comprehensive knowledge in Materials Science and Engineering. During the six semesters of the study cycle, a solid education in basic sciences (mathematics, chemistry, physics), engineering sciences (design and computational methods) and materials science and technology is provided, with a strong practical teaching and laboratory practice component.
It also provides the development of transferrable skills for the engineering activity and an experience in real work context within the scope of the curricular unit “Graduation Project”.
Objectives
The principal objective is to provide graduates with comprehensive knowledge in Basic Sciences (Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics) and Engineering Sciences (Design and Computational Methods), in addition to specific knowledge in Engineering Materials, taking a broad view of properties, processing and applications of the main classes of Materials (Metals, Ceramic and Polymer, including the Nanomaterials and Biomaterials).
Despite the fact that LiEMAT provides broad education, preparing the students for entry into the second cycle training (Master´s programe), it also prepares students to:
- operate in the broad field of Materials Engineering;
- analyse and solve engineering problems in diverse contexts, including the most relevant social, scientific and ethical issues;
- interact with peers within multidisciplinary teams, in a collaborative , ethically and professionally responsible manner.
