Description: | The Doctoral Program in Digital Media is a joint program offered by the University of Porto and the New University of Lisbon, with the support of the University of Texas at Austin. It is a multidisciplinary program organized in four areas of specialization: (1) audiovisual and interactive content creation, (2) Technology, (3) Industry, public and Markets. At UP the course will be based in the Faculty of Engineering, actively involving the Faculties of Humanities, Fine Arts, Economics and Sciences. |
The main objective of this course is to give an insight into the digital culture, addressing the history of Multimedia — in particular of Digital Media — and to reflect on trends and influences of digital media in contemporary society and culture. It aims to give students a broad overview on the impacts of digital technology, and to give insights into how technological developments in this area forged a new expressive culture. Lectures will have themes drawn from the list outlined in the program that will be addressed both from an historical perspective as well as considering its possible developments in the near future.
The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the basic research tools, allowing them to:
In addition, the course also intends to endow students with basic entrepreneurship skills. To this end, the course presents basic (economic and business) tools and concepts, allowing students to apply them in specific problems related to business model design.
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
This course aims at developing skills in designing and developing solutions based on emerging multimedia technologies in the context of experimentation, where it is expected that each work will address a proble, formulate an hypothesis, preparare tests, perform tests and extract results annd conclusions.
Possible topics to develop:
a) new multimedia paradigms (virtual environments, mobile devices);
b) interactive narrative models for spatio-temporal data (metadata, networks, search results, etc): Depicting changes;
c) information processing and visualization for social media.
d) game analytics.
e) Big data visualization
This is a compulsory course that is divided into two interconnected parts with autonomous syllabus, although approached taking into account their complementarities. The first, on Quantitative Methods, aims at exploring the hypotheses testing and multivariate statistical analysis procedures in the production of scientific knowledge and to consolidate skills for the critical evaluation of their potential and limitations. The second, o Qualitative Methods, aims to lay down the procedures for analyzing qualitative information, evaluating them per se, as well as their synergies with thequantitative approach, on a mixed methods approach.
Seminar II aims at developing students’ skills regarding the organization and the lead of scientific events . It also intends to allow students to deepen the most relevant themes in their area of research within an interactive content.
Students are expected to be able to:
- Identify opportunities to develop solutions based on Digital Media;
- Develop creative solutions using Digital Media to solve concrete problems;
- Establish and lead multidisciplinary teams in solving complex problems.
The course aims to deepen and systematize the knowledge of Digital Media technologies, considering the following topics:
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
