This course unit develops a comprehensive analysis of digital culture and the history of digital media, reflecting on their impact on society and culture.
Research Methodologies
PDMD029 - ECTS
- Understand the basic concepts of scientific research;
- Understand its limitations, strengths, weaknesses and applicability
- Develop systemic and reflective argumentation appropriate to the research plan;
- Consider multi-methodological approaches as a way of enriching the dissertation plan;
- Identify the diversity of research projects carried out in the multidisciplinary field of digital media;
- Formulate research questions based on the ability to organise and conduct a review of the relevant international literature, favouring references published in peer-reviewed journals;
- Present and communicate the assumptions, processes and results of the research project proposal clearly and precisely.
Seminar I
PDMD018 - ECTS
The main objective of this course is to introduce students to the basic research tools, allowing them to:
- Understand the different steps and dimensions that typically integrate an academic research work
- Correctly select bibliographic sources in order to have a deep understanding of a given literature
- Identify good practices on research and analyze critically specific research projects
- Identify state-of-the-art research lines in the main fields of the Doctoral Programme in Digital Media
- Identify ethical issues arising in the context of the research activity
- Enhance skills to communicate a research proposal in an effective way.
In addition, the course also intends to endow students with basic entrepreneurship skills. To this end, the course presents basic (economic and business) tools and concepts, allowing students to apply them in specific problems related to business model design.
Advanced Topics in Digital Media
PDMD028 - ECTS
This course is intended for students who, in view of the topic they intend to investigate in their doctorate, need to study subjects that are not covered in the set of courses offered by this or other UP programmes.
The main aim of the curricular unit is to provide the student with an in-depth set of concepts, resulting from a study work to be carried out by the student, duly accompanied by a specific supervisor to be appointed by the programme's Scientific Committee.
Data Analysis and Digital Methods

This course focuses on some specific components of the design of research. More specifically, the course will address:
- the kinds of methods that will produce the information needed to answer research questions; and
- how to analyze data of various kinds in order to answer research questions.

PDMD019 - ECTS
Seminar II aims at developing students’ skills regarding the organization and the lead of scientific events . It also intends to allow students to deepen the most relevant themes in their area of research within an interactive content.
Students are expected to be able to:
- Identify opportunities to develop solutions based on Digital Media;
- Develop creative solutions using Digital Media to solve concrete problems;
- Establish and lead multidisciplinary teams in solving complex problems.

The course aims to deepen and systematize the knowledge of Digital Media technologies, considering the following topics:
- Main characteristics of different media and its digital representations.
- Multimedia information processing.
- Architectures, software models and environments for building multimedia applications.
- Navigation and structuring models for multimedia and hypermedia information.
- Advanced application systems including mobile applications, tangible interfaces and augmented reality.
