Business Process Modeling

ESG0002 - ECTS After the completion of this course unit, students should be able to:
a - Describe and explain the context that supports the development of new models and business processes supported by information and communication technologies.
b - Explain the benefits of process- oriented organizations management and describe the regulatory frameworks and models of reference.
c - Identify and design the processes of an organization from its business model.
d - List, explain and apply the main methods, techniques and support tools to the modeling and analysis of processes in an organization.
e - Specify information systems to support the implementation and management of business processes from their models.

Organizational Behaviour

ESG0004 - ECTS

Enterprise Management

ESG0001 - ECTS It is intended to put students in contact with the main concepts of management, providing them with an integrated view of processes and the different areas of management. In this sense, it addresses the process of management, the main functional areas, and strategic management as an area integrator.
The course unit has a theoretical and practical nature, combining the theoretical basis for its application to the study of cases of companies and the carrying out of work.

Human-Computer Interaction

EIC0057 - ECTS Main aims:
The main aim of this course unit is to prepare students to analyse and project interactive components of systems, particularly the user interface. It should be adequately done, considering the short, the medium and the long term.

Aims:
1. To prepare students to analyse interactive systems concerning their quantitative and qualitative parameters.
2. To prepare students to use study, observation and questioning techniques based on the understanding of the conceptual model of system users
3. To prepare students to use a construction process of interactive products based on the design, user assessment, conception, prototyping, validation, construction and maintenance.

Multimedia and New Services

ESG0025 - ECTS - Analyze and discuss the structuring role of communications and its impacts on organization and economic and social development of societies (companies, citizens, public administration).
- Understanding the technological trends of telecommunications (networks, terminals, services).
- To be acquainted with the relevant aspects of the sector in Portugal and in the world.
- Mastering some basic technological concepts to facilitate multi-disciplinary dialogue in organizations, either internal collaborative processes or in the external relationship with partners, suppliers or customers of the value chain.
- Learn to make use of ICT (as part of multimedia communication) to promote innovation, whether in business models, in production processes or decisions, products and services.
- To be acquainted with the incorporation of electronic communication platforms in the construction and provision of services, using real case studies.

Decision Support Systems

ESG0005 - ECTS - understand the complexity and quantitative and qualitative aspects of decision making processes, using simple approaches for their structuring;
- be able to create spreadsheet models and develop tools for decision support;
- use general concepts and principles of Decision Theory and Multicriteria Analysis, to structure decision alternatives and criteria;
- be able to perform data analysis and modelling, as well as sensitivity and scenario analysis;
- use optimization, heuristic and simulation models and algorithms, to suppor the solution of decision problems;
- understand the problems associated with the design of Decision Support Systems e be able to contribute to their specification.

Information Systems I

EIG0021 - ECTS MAIN AIMS
The main aim of this course unit is to train students to design adequate information systems which fulfil users’ needs and the objectives of organisations, always taking into account the short, medium and long term.

OTHER AIMS
1. To train students to use identification techniques of critical factors of success, activities modeling and business processes.
2. To train students to use conceptual modeling techniques of information, particularly object classes.
3. To train students to use user interface modeling techniques.
4. To train students to use a design methodology of computer technology.
5. To train students to use the available computer tools on Database Management Systems (DBMS) for Information Systems prototyping.
6. To train students to use relational modeling techniques.

Accounting and Financial Management

ESG0012 - ECTS In the context of the value creation and management, the aim of this course is to give students theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to understand the consequences of operational decisions, by acquiring skills both in accounting and in financial management.

Dissertation - Introduction to Research Project I

ESG0009 - ECTS This course unit aims to provide students with conceptual and instrumental resources to carry out a research project in the domain of social sciences. The concepts to be approached are related to two general domains: the historical and epistemological context of social sciences research and the comprehension of the different stages of a research project.
At the end, students should have developed a set of skills in the domain of social sciences research, which allows them to autonomously conceive and carry out an individual research project.

Requirements Engineering for Services

ESG0014 - ECTS To endow students with skills to plan, manage and carry out a process of analysis and specification of requirements of a service system based in technologies.

Service Operations Management and Logistics

ESG0010 - ECTS It is expected to endow the students with skills to:
- develop an global view of the traditional and recent concepts of operations management, logistics and supply chain management in services;
- design, plan and manage operations and logistics in the service sector, considering the maximization of operational efficiency and client satisfaction;
- understand the role of operations and logistics in the global strategy of the company;
- understand the need to align the logistic processes with those of the suppliers and clients.

Human Resources Management

ESG0015 - ECTS The main aim of this course unit is to train students on human resources/people management, by stressing the importance of Human Resources Management as an area which deals with policies, systems, orientation and strategies of organisation.

This course unit also aims to develop students’ skills on the use of different Human Resources Management tools, which contribute to a more efficient and motivating management of people.

Services Marketing

ESG0011 - ECTS It is intended that students understand the role of marketing services in the management of organizations, whether businesses or companies providing services industries that include a service component in its global offering to customers. The course places students in contact with the main concepts and tools to develop strategies and plans for marketing services. It is also intended to put students in contact with the main challenges and opportunities in the area of marketing services, including the development of technology-based services.

Capital Budgeting

ESG0024 - ECTS This course unit aims to provide students with knowledge of basic methodologies for the analysis of the financial and economic feasibility of investment projects in certainty and uncertainty conditions.
After the completion of the course unit, students should be capable of:
- justifying a decision or real investments
- designing a business plan

Inf: the Business Plan will be based on Portuguese relevant legislation

Enterprise Management Architecture

ESG0022 - ECTS The objective of this course is to provide students with the essential tools for exploration, refinement, evaluation and implementation of new businesses.
We aim at ensuring that students to use, in an articulated way, analysis tools that will enable them to successfully overcome the uncertainties faced by entrepreneurs.
The course includes a strong experimentation component, which aims at providing students with right skills, know-how and attitude, given the lack of relevant work experience that most of them will typically reveal.
At the end of the course students will be able, individually and in groups, to identify a business opportunity, and evaluating it's potential.

Information Systems Architecture

ESG0013 - ECTS SPECIFIC AIMS:
This course unit aims to make students understand:
- the role of Information Systems (IS) in organisations and the importance of being aligned with organisations strategy;
- the concept of Information Systems Architecture (ISA) and its importance within organisations and whether ASI is able to develop the appropriate business strategy.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- to acquire knowledge in business models in digital economy
- to be capable of making decisions in IS, chiefly in the area of IS planning and management
- to be capable of using IS in the aspects related to business analysis and knowledge management
- to understand the concept of Information Systems Architecture (ISA) and its importance within organisations
- to be acquainted with some frameworks and their practical application in ISA definition
- to be capable of using methods and tools to acquire different architectures involved in ISA (business, data, applications, technology)
- to be capable of developing an appropriate ISA to business necessities and strategy
- to contact with some trends of application development in order to help the exchange of information and interoperability (XML, Web Services, SOA, etc.)

New Service Development and Design

ESG0019 - ECTS The course aims at providing and developing competences on the different new service development and design methodologies, integrating a robust theoretical ground, based on the discussion of state of the art methods cases, with its application to a new service development project. The course is intended to provide you with the following benefits:
1. Competence with a set of tools and methods for new service design and development.
2. Create confidence in your own ability to create a new service /product service.
3. Raise awareness of the role of the customer and multiple functions/stakeholders in creating a new product
4. Develop the ability to coordinate multiple, interdisciplinary tasks, in order to achieve a common objective.
5. Consolidate knowledge from other courses through practice in a project of design of a New Service .
6. Enhance team working skills.
7. Define and organize a product/service development process in the enterprise.
8. Define a well structured plan for the development of new product/services.
9. Study and become familiar with the use of different tools and techniques to develop systematically and methodically innovative service/products giving careful thought to the role to be played by the various functional areas of the company, both during the development phase an also on commercial launch and after sales servicing .
10. Align the product/service development process with the strategic goals of the company.
