Description: Under the profissional point of view, the Masters in Environment Engineering must have the capacity to project and implement preventive technologies, intervention, abatement and rehabilitation technologies to reduce or eliminate the fatal effects of pollution and to decrease the intensity of use of natural resources, minimizing the negative impact of human activity in Environment.

Courses Units

Mathematical Analysis I

EA0006 - ECTS The themes teached in this course are seen as a thinking organization tool/language, and consequently, of basic support to the quantitative formulation of problems, similar to engineering. The successful student will be able to understand and use correctly the basilar and mathematical concepts and procedures, emphasizing the derivation and the integration. This course, as well as Mathematical Analysis II, focuses on the understanding and the exercise of an extremely operational, compacted and synthetic language, necessary for the development (mathematical) of fundamental concepts and themes on other courses during the degree.
It aims to provide the student with a knowledge basis which may help on the understanding of expositions of different and more specific contents of the Undergraduate Degree.

EA0004 - ECTS Revision of concepts of Biology and Physics from High School curricular programmes.

Environmental Geology

EA0008 - ECTS This course aims to familiarize the students with the main Geology concepts and to think about the Earth’s anthropogenic actions as influent and easily influenced by the various dynamics which form it.

Introduction to Environmental Engineering

EA0009 - ECTS Present to the students the main background concepts, language, definitions, descriptions and issues in the environmental theme. Motivate and create them a constructive criticism as well as opening them a window on their future activity as environmental engineers.
Develop personal and interrelationship skills, work in group and improve communication

Conceive, project, implement and operate systems at companies and social context

Informatics Laboratory

EA0010 - ECTS The course seeks to provide knowledge in computer programming with an emphasis on algorithm design for different problems and to give insights into the major applications of computers.
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:
- Implement efficient programs for different problems.
- Use other programming languages.
- Use commercial codes, modify and build programs for solving engineering problems.

Project FEUP

FEUP002 - ECTS SOAPFEUP significa Socialização e Aprendizagem na FEUP.
Trata-se de uma oportunidade criada aos alunos que pela primeira vez ingressam na FEUP de poderem, de Forma activa e em trabalho de equipa, conhecerem a Escola e os recursos à sua disposição, bem como adquirirem conhecimentos pela prática nos domínios da pesquisa bibliográfica, da resolução de problemas, do uso de “ferramentas” informáticas e da comunicação.

Environmental Chemistry I

EA0007 - ECTS Global aims:
• To pass on fundamental knowledge on chemistry that will support the student education regarding Environmental Chemistry;
• To give a global vision of fundamental chemistry in an interface framework with environment and Environmental Chemistry;
• To develop a scientific reasoning;
• To stimulate a critical mind, aiming to avoid the primary acceptance of results;
• To promote the student auto-sufficiency, valuing the search and use of recently published data.

Specific aims:
• To deep and consolidate the previously acquired knowledge on chemistry;
• To create capacities for: i) interpreting the characteristics of gases, liquids and solids; ii) quantifying the composition of systems on chemical equilibrium; iii) previewing and understanding the answer of systems to changes in equilibrium conditions; iv) calculating, for the systems, the time needed to reach determined chemical composition.

Algebra

EA0014 - ECTS It is aimed that the student develops the creative mathematical thinking, integrates concepts and learns techniques related to Linear Algebra and Analytical Geometry, namely on the following contents:
- Linear Systems.
Solving Linear Systems; •Linear Geometry in Rn; Diagonalization;
- Vector Spaces
• Definition of vector space; Linear combinations and independence; Basis and dimension;
- Applications between Spaces
• Homomorphism; Isomorphisms; Calculation of linear maps; Change of basis; Projections;
- Similarity
Complex Vector Spaces; Determinant of a Matrix; similarity; Nilpotency; Jordan Form; Conics, Quadratics;
- Familiarization with computer tools for solving Linear Algebra and Analytical Geometry exercises.

Mathematical Analysis II

EA0011 - ECTS The themes taught in this course are seen as an engineering tool/ language. Therefore, it is expected that the student will be able to understand and correctly use the basic mathematical concepts and procedures. This course, as well as Mathematical Analysis I, is focused on the understanding and exercise of an extremely operational, compact and synthetic language, necessary for the (mathematical) development of fundamental concepts and themes on other courses of the degree. In that sense, it aims to provide the student with a knowledge basis which may help on the understanding of different specific contents of the undergraduate degree.

Environmental Sciences Laboratories

EA0015 - ECTS Familiarize the student with laboratory security procedures – “the behavior in a laboratory”;
Acquisition of – elementary knowledge of management of fundamental chemical and physical variables. Introduce basic experimental concepts in microbiology.

Microbiology

EA0013 - ECTS Students should obtain general knowledge on microbiology through fundamental aspects on: cell chemical composition, microorganisms from Domains Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya, microbial growth, microbial metabolism and microbial genetics. Students should also acquire general concepts on methods of isolation and characterization of microorganisms and of microbial control.

Environmental Chemistry II

EA0012 - ECTS The aims of the course are: to acquire, with the necessary proficiency, knowledge in chemistry; to develop capacities of thought and resolution of problems, for the discovery of the knowledge, personal, interpersonal and professional aptitudes and attitudes.

Effluents and Residues Characterization

EA0016 - ECTS To present the fundamental concepts in the characterization of waters, wastewaters, solid wastes and sludges, as well as the more commom methodologies used to determine their characteristics.

Physics I

EA0019 - ECTS -Learning the vocabulary of Physics.
-Analysis of the physical phenomena trough illustrative examples and class demonstrations.
-Development of problem solving skills.
-Introduction to the basic concepts and phenomena of Classic Mechanics, including wave propagation and statics of fluids.
-Introduction to elementar nuclear physics.

Environmental Sciences Laboratories I

EA0020 - ECTS Acquire knowledge for monitoring water and air quality as well as for evaluating noise and waste characteristics.
Devellop working skills through a working group experience

Numerical Methods

EA0017 - ECTS Students are introduced to the main algorithms of numerical analysis, which are explored in different environments, namely by hand calculation, spreadsheets, calculators, programming languages and computer algebra systems.
The facts that "numbers are inaccurate" and that "error propagates" are also emphasized.

Thermodynamics

EA0018 - ECTS Introduce students to the concepts of classical thermodynamics and their application to real systems, particularly in the area of environmental engineering.

Physics II

EA0023 - ECTS • The acquisition of the fundamental knowledge in physics necessary to describe and understand the physics involved in electric, magnetic and radiation phenomena.
• The gain of familiarity with the forementioned physics phenomena, either by their practical uses, namely electric circuits, electronic components, geometric and wave optics, and by the role they play in a wider context such as environmental physics.
• The attainement of abilities in the analysis and resolution, alone or in a team, of exercises in these domains of Physics and the use of these abilities in performing, analysing and communicating the results of simple laboratory experiments.

Fluid Mechanics I

EA0022 - ECTS To introduce basic concepts about fluid mechanics. Special attention is given to the physical interpretation of these concepts. To apply these concepts to gas-solid and liquid-solid separation operations.

Statistical Methods

EA0021 - ECTS Pretende-se que o aluno desenvolva o pensamento estatístico criativo, integre conceitos, assimile as técnicas e desenvolva capacidades para a sua aplicação, nomeadamente, quando confrontado com problemas que requeiram o tratamento e caracterização estatísticas de dados.

Topography, Cartography and Geographical Information Systems

EA0024 - ECTS

Ecology and General Ecotoxicology

EA0027 - ECTS To learn the fundamental concepts of General Ecology and Ecotoxicology. Students should also learn the basic available tools for the study of the Ecology of populations and Ecotoxicology. Students should acquire some training in lab techniques for evaluation of the toxicity of pollutants.

Fluid Mechanics II

EA0029 - ECTS Application of the fundamental concepts of Fluid Mechanics to the design of hydraulic and air circuits used in Environmental Engineering studies.
To guarantee to the future Environmental Engineering Masters the qualifications needed for the design of those circuits.

Decision Methods

EA0026 - ECTS Endow the students with competences to:
- identify and approach decision problems in a structured way;
- build models for decision problems;
- use quantitative methods to obtain solutions for models;
- use spreadsheets for the models analysis and solution generation;
- begin to use the information extracted from the models to induce and motivate organizational changes.

Heat and Mass Transfer

EA0028 - ECTS Transmitir os conhecimentos básicos de transferência de calor e a sua aplicação a equipamentos de transferência e armazenagem.

Os objectivos a atingir pelos alunos são a compreensão física e matemática dos mecanismos de transferência de massa (difusão e convecção) , adquirir conhecimentos sólidos sobre transporte de um componente entre fases em contacto, conceito de resistência pelicular à transferência de massa e resistência global, estabelecimento de balanços macroscópicos e microscópicos de massa, em diversas geometrias, quer em regime permanente, quer em regime transiente, aplicação dos conceitos adquiridos a alguns equipamentos simples, o desenvolvimento da capacidade de resolver problemas.

Energy and Environment

EA0034 - ECTS To understand the relashionship between energy and environment and to be able to deal with systems of energy conversion.

Environmental Decision Tools

EA0031 - ECTS The course aims at providing knowledge on environmental systems analysis tools currently used to support decision making. The students are able to:
- identify the tools used currently;
- describe the tools' basic characteristics;
- select tools from a toolbox;
- apply the tools on performing an environmental integrated assessment.

Biological Reactors

EA0033 - ECTS To acquire with the necessary proficiency advanced knowledge in engineering regarding the design and operation of biological reactors that are used on wastewater treatment. To develop capabilities of reasoning and solving engineering problems related to the design and operation of biological reactors.
