Objectives

The Planning Seminar is dedicated to the study of territorial problems and challenges, and to the use of diverse methodologies and instruments of analysis and diagnosis, based on current themes and areas of study. Classes are therefore a space clearly oriented to the presentation of specific thematic content with a strong spatial context.

The work is seeking to promote some specific competences, based on the ability to: I)-select and analyze relevant literature on a topic or analytical problem, ii)-choose and use methodologies and analytical tools, iii)-organize and plan the analytical problem resolution concerned, iv)-collect and treat information from real base.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is intended to achieve the following training objectives:

 -To enable the student to the meticulous exploration of topics and methodologies associated with urban and territorial problems;

-To enable the student to the use of methodologies and tools for territorial analysis;

-Empower the student to the importance of combining concepts and theories with a strong territorial context, that is, with the real space of the problems and their dynamics.

Program

Specific framework

Urban space is both a place where social inequalities are manifested and a factor that contributes to worsening them. Among the various lenses we can use to measure the scale of this phenomenon, we highlight those linked to the well-being and health of the people who live there. In this context, the dimensions linked to urban space (from access to decent housing and quality green spaces to social and human capital) have a high specific weight which, according to the World Health Organisation, is even greater than that of the availability of healthcare facilities.

Urban planning professionals and researchers find this an opportunity to improve people's lives, but also a challenge when it comes to operationalising interventions in the urban space which, according to this lens, must take on an integrated dimension. Among the emerging approaches to solving these problems we find those that focus on processes promoted by the communities themselves, or with their strong involvement, with recent experiences such as the “Bairros Saudáveis” (Healthy Neighbourhood)s programme being an example of this methodology.

In order to understand this approach and enable its implementation in real contexts, the contents of this course are both theoretical and practical. On the one hand, the aim is to learn about the theoretical and institutional framework that guides the production of healthier cities, as well as the main areas of intervention and the planning and management tools that make them possible. On the other hand, a set of methodologies and tools will be presented that are geared towards local action, both in terms of recognising the variables that condition the quality of spaces and in terms of mobilising the players needed for the desired transformation.

Program
1 - Theoretical and institutional framework of healthy cities. Application of literature review and diagnostic methodologies.
2 - Methodologies and tools for local action.
3 - Development of proposals for the case of Porto.

Eligibility for exams

Achieving final classification requires compliance with attendance at the course unit. It is considered that students meet the attendance requirements if, having been regularly enrolled, the number of absences of 25% for each of the classes’ types is not exceeded.

The following cases are exempted from the attendance requirements:
i) cases prescribed by law, including student workers;
ii) students who were admitted to exams in the previous academic year.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation involves a process of continuous assessment that is based on individual work/monography (40%) and group work (60%). This assessment takes into account the reports delivered as well as the follow-up of the work in class, the functioning of the working groups, and the communication and assertiveness skills expressed through the presentations and discussions held throughout the classes.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Special Evaluation (TE, DA, etc..) follows the provisions of General Regulation of Student Special Evaluation.
