Objectives

This course shall address the existing and the needed policies that will allow a successful reaching the goal of a fully decarbonised Buildings Sector in Portugal by 2050. The course will adress the technical problems and challenges, both economic and social, to make participants fully aware of all the general context, as well as the possible paths for a solution, including a discussion about the advanatges and disadvantages of each solution.

The focus will rest on the renovation of existing buildings, the major challenge to reach the full decarbonization of the Buildings sector by 2050.

Finally, participants shall be motivated to think about and discuss their own ideas about the best paths for sustainable solutions, including technical, financial and social instruments, as well as improved public policies that will need to be implemented within a relatively short period of time. Participants shall be encouraged to become important actors in this great challenge, by developing new construction paradigms that will need to be in place within the next 2-3 decades.

Learning outcomes and competences

Participants shall obtain a global overview of the policies and challenges for decarbonization of the Buildings Sector, as well as the main methodologies to adopt, the main existing technologies and innovation under development, and the main challenges to attain the final goal. They shall acquire the capacity to tackle a major issue that will be present in their professional lives during the next three decades, at least.
