Objectives

Complements the syllabus of Fluid Mechanics I and II. Basically we teach advanced fluid mechanics. For instance,  olutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, the boundary layer theory, non-Newtonian fluid mechanics and rheologu, microfluidics and modeling of flow in turbulent regime by analytical or computational means.

Provides critical assessment of complex fluid flows.

Mathematical Analysis I and II, Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry, Computer Programming, Numerical Analysis, Mechanics I and II, Thermodynamics I and II, Fluid Mechanics I and II, and Heat Transfer.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Presentation of theoretical concepts and solutions of some examples during class time. These same concepts and the solution of more elaborate problems is to be carried out individually or in group study.

Calculation formula of final grade

Four assignements, one for each topic. Each assignement must have a minimum mark of 7/20 for approval.

Assignement 1: solutions of flow problems for Navier-Stokes equations and the boundary layer theory (20% for final mark)
Assignement 2: solutions of flow problems involving non-Newtonian fluids and fluid rheology (25% for final mark)
Assignement 3: solutions of turbulent flow problems (20% for final mark)
Assignement 4: one CFD case (30% for final mark)

Each member of each group will also evaluate the performance of his/her colleagues within the group, which wil have an impact on the individual mark.

Since the evaluation of this module s continuous andspecifically through four group assignements along the semester, it is not possible to substitute by a single moment evaluation, therefore there is no resit evaluation. The student will have to apply for the next edition of the course, in the next academic year.

Since the evaluation of this module s continuous andspecifically through four group assignements along the semester, it is not possible to substitute by a single moment evaluation, therefore the evaluation for students with a special status is identical to that of regular students, namely by performing the various assignements along the semester.

The student will have to apply for the next edition of the course,according to article 18 of the general regulations of student evaluation (see Rector document number GR.04/01/2018).
