Objectives

It is intended that students understand the particularities of the GIS structure and that they are entitled to conceive spatial models.
It is expected that students acquire skills in identification of environmental problems, their relationship with the occupation of the territory and with the urban form and the type of "solutions" available for environmental problems mitigation.
It is also objective of the present Curricular Unit the development of technical skills in the field of sustainability that will be incorporated in their professional activity and that they are entitled to make an assessment of the sustainability of spatial plans, in particular, detailed plans and land division schemes.

SKILLS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge: Describe the mechanism of setting up and usig a SIG. Identification of environmental problems.
Application: Apply methodologies for environmental impact assessment and sustainability assessment
Analysis: Analyze the conflicts generated by the detected environmental impacts on their interaction with the territory. Potential for the improvement of territorial development plans taking into account the results of the sustainability assessment.
Summary: Proposing design solutions that minimize environmental impacts and maximize the sustanability of the project
Assessment: evaluate and criticize the decision processes

Introduction to geographical information systems (GIS).
- Concepts, applications, SIG structure.
Environmental problems in urban context (air pollution, noise pollution, water pollution, etc.).
- Concepts, indicators, applicable legislation, strategies for action.
- Use of GIS in the identification, evaluation, mitigation and monitoring of environmental problems and as an instrument to support the strategic environmental assessment.
SIG as planning tool for sustainability.
- Concepts, strategies of intervention, stages of participation, performance indicators, evaluation and classification systems.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This Curricular Unit (CU) is structured in theoretical and theoretical-practical lessons in which students will take contact with different environmental issues.
Will be promoted the use of dedicated software, in particular, ArcView and some of its extensions, the analysis of results obtained from specific software concerning the environmental factors of interest for this CU and a critical evaluation of the environmental problems identified and the potential mitigation measures.
The evaluation type of this CU is Distributed Evaluation with Final Exam.
The distributed evaluation shall incorporate the preparation and presentation of a team work and/or also individual assignments regarding the skills learned in this CU.

Eligibility for exams

Achieving final classification requires compliance with attendance at the course unit. It is considered that students meet the attendance requirements if, having been regularly enrolled, the number of absences of 25% for each of the classes’ types is not exceeded. The following cases are exempted from the attendance requirements: 
i) cases prescribed by law, including student workers; 
ii) students who were admitted to exams in the previous academic year.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students who are exempted from compliance with the conditions of listed attendance in point i) may be assessed solely by examination, but may opt for the same evaluation conditions of ordinary students.

Students who are exempted from compliance with the conditions of listed attendance in point ii) and opting for non-realization of new distributed evaluation will be evaluated similarly to ordinary students, with the classification of distributed evaluation obtained in the previous school year.

Students whom, for reasons not dependent of their actions, duly justified and accepted by the direction of the MIEC, may have the the evaluation of the distributed component added to the Exam classification.
