To provide the fundamentals for an adequate use of the Newton-Raphson Method on the nonlinear analysis of structures, supported on discretizations based of the Finite Element Method.
To learn how to use computational codes of nonlinear structural analysis, including the implementation of computational routines for the simulation of different types of nonlinearities.
The most important forms of nonlinear analysis in Structural Engineering: material and geometric nonlinearity. Details of total and updated Lagrangian formulations in one dimensional non-linear geometrical problems. Solution algorithms and systemization of resolution of a non-linear problem by the Newton-Raphson method. Arc-length and displacement control methods. Materials modelling: brittle and ductile behaviour. Fracture energy. Analytical resolution of simple structural problems for the illustration of two nonlinearity forms. Focus on the interpretation of associated physical problems and their resolution.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE SYLLABUS COHERENCE WITH THE CURRICULAR UNIT'S OBJECTIVES:
The matters to be lectured allow the students to get the essential background in structural analysis, detailing the methodologies and the techniques usually adopted for the modelling of the nonlinear material behaviour and the geometrical nonlinearity.
The teaching involves sessions with theoretical presentations and discussions. The student grading will be based on a report assignment and a written exam if necessary.
DEMONSTRATION OF THE COHERENCE BETWEEN THE TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND THE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
The report assignment and the discussion of the UC contents allows for an efficient learning experience at this education level.
