Objectives

To provide the future graduates with a set of basic and structuring concepts on Industrial Automation, enabling the dialogue with specialists of the area and the capability of making choices, technically and scientifically based, between several proposed solutions for a given problem.
By the end of this course, the student will be able to:
• Identify driving and control equipments presented in automatic systems;
• Describe the operating principles and applicability of equipments used for driving and control functions in automatic systems;
• Evaluate and specify driving and control solutions;
• Calculate driving and control solutions for pneumatic, hydraulic and electromechanical systems;
•Design control systems based on cabled logic with pneumatic and electromechanical components;
• Develop control solutions using Programmable logic controllers.

Program

Industrial Automation Systems: examples, definitions and concepts; Driving technologies in industrial machines; Introduction to Logical Systems theory; Elements of pneumatic and electromechanical systems: production and distribution of compressed air, pneumatic actuators, valves, symbols, circuits and power command; Elements of electromechanical systems: industrial electrical engines, cut and protection equipment, symbols, circuits and power commands; Industrial sensors; Introduction to oil-hydraulic elements; GRAFCET and Programmable logic controllers; Comparison and discussion of the fields of use of the different driving technologies.

Teaching methods and learning activities

This course unit is based on two different types of classes: theoretical-practical and practical.
Theoretical-practical classes are based on the presentation of the themes of the course and they are supported by audio-visual devices.
Practical classes will take place at the laboratory and they will be based on two different types of approach:
- Problem solving by applying the concepts that have been taught; presentation and description of technologies and corresponding support elements that can be observed and manipulated by students.
- Experimental practical assignments related to pneumatic, electrical driving and automator programming.

Eligibility for exams

To be admitted to exams, students have to be enrolled in the course and do not miss more classes than allowed by the rules.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification is the average mark calculated with the classification obtained in component A (75%) and in component B(25%).
The evaluation component A comprises 3 written exams, being used the following rule
0,4x(1ºexam) + 0,35x(2º exam) + 0,25x(3º exam)

Examinations or Special Assignments

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The students with a special status may choose to attend the course as ordinary students, submitting themselves to a similar evaluation.
In alternative, the students must submit to:
- One written exam that represents 50% of the final classification;
- One oral examination that will represent the other 50 % of the final classification.
However, to get access to the oral exam, the student must have a result equal or superior to 7.5 marks (in 20) on the written exam.

Classification improvement

The students may improve their final classification in two ways:

Process I: by submitting themselves to:
- One written exam that will represent 50% of the final classification;
- One oral exam that will represent the other 50% of the final classification.
However, to get access to the oral exam, the student must have a result equal or superior to 7.5 marks (in 20) on the written exam.

Process II: the student may choose to repeat one (and only one) of the written exams (from the evaluation component A). The final classification is obtained in accordance with the rules defined above in " Final Grade”.
