Metalics Constructions
Instance: 2006/2007 - 1S
Cycles of Study/Courses
Teaching language
Portuguese
Objectives
Based on the knowledge gained in the study of Strength of Materials complemented with concepts from the Theory of Instability and with specific regulations, a series of common problems in the area of Steel structures are proposed. These applications will allow future engineers an easy integration into practical civil engineering activity.
Program
1. Historical note. Mechanical properties of steel. Steel products (reference to steel profiles of european, british and american series). Bases of design: Portuguese code REAE and Eurocode EC3.
2. Design of structural elements submitted to different types of forces, single and combined. Different structural types and application field. Detailed calculation of industrial hangers.
3. Theory of instability: buckling of compression elements, lateral-torsional buckling and lateral buckling of bending members. Economical design of composed steel profiles.
4. Fatigue.
5. Protection of steel construction: corrosion and fire.
6. Design of bolted and welded joints.
Teaching methods and learning activities
The subject is presented based on practical applications.
