José Costa, EUR ING, holds a Ph.D. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and has a decade and a half of experience bridging advanced manufacturing research and industrial application. Specialized in metal Additive Manufacturing, his expertise includes project management, process optimization, and technology integration.
In addition to his technical background, José completed advanced postgraduate studies in Services Management at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto (FEP), and MSc. and BSc. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, equipping him with a solid foundation in organizational strategy and innovation leadership. His profile reflects a combination of engineering depth and strategic insight.
At the University of Porto (FEUP), his research focuses on the disruptive potential of AM technologies while contributing to national and European R&D+i initiatives (e.g., CARAVELA, VIRIATO, Hi-Rev). As an Invited Assistant, he teaches and supervises in additive manufacturing (AM), materials science, and product development, actively promoting collaboration between academia and industry.
Previously, as European Technical Manager and Deputy Director at Yazaki Europe, José established an international innovation center (Germany, Regensburg) and led high-performance teams within multicultural, cross-functional, and matrix organizational environments across EMEA, the USA, and Japan. He implemented AM and smart manufacturing (Industry 4.0) solutions, coordinated strategic technology roadmaps, and drove supplier development and process innovation initiatives.
José combines scientific rigor with strategic foresight. He consistently aligns engineering excellence with business objectives, enabling organizations to unlock the full potential of AM. Known for his integrity, critical thinking, and leadership capabilities, he guides multidisciplinary teams and delivers impactful technology transfer. His professional identity is defined by sustainable innovation, operational transformation, and a clear vision for the future of manufacturing.
