Current position: Associate Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP); Collaborator of the R&D unit CONSTRUCT- Institute of R&D in Structures and Construction.

Education: Degree in Civil Engineering from FEUP (1984); Master in Civil Engineering Structures from FEUP (1990); PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Porto (1999).

Main research interests/skills: Short and long-term characterization of composite materials reinforced with continuous fibers (FRPs); Reinforcement of concrete, wood, steel and stone structures with FRP systems; Rehabilitation and reinforcement of structures; Quality, safety and environment control; Experimental analysis in laboratory and in-situ; Construction with new materials.

Years of relevant experience: 35

Main activities: Member of the team of 6 research projects (FCT) and responsible researcher of 4 projects with the industry; Co-supervision of 2 doctoral theses and 10 pre-Bologna master's theses; Author / co-author of more than 130 technical and scientific publications and about 30 technical reports for public and private institutions mainly in the fields of composite materials and the behaviour of structures reinforced with FRP systems.

Other relevant information: Organization of 4 international conferences “CCC - Composites in Construction" held in Portugal, Italy (be Co-Chairman) and France; Organization of several technical and scientific meetings; Member of the jury of 5 international PhD theses; Member of the working group GT 004 - FRP'S of CT 115; Member of fib Commission 5 (COM5) - TG5.1 - FRP Reinforcement for concrete structures.
