The structural and mechanical characterization of advanced materials is the main objective of the research work. Diffusion bonding of advanced materials, the development of intermetallic alloys and nanocomposites as well as the study of nanostructured materials in the form of thin films and massive materials have been the subjects in which the research work has been focused. The study of the bonding of TiAl, NiAl and TiNi intermetallic alloys by brazing diffusion and by solid state diffusion bonding, between similar and dissimilar materials, has been developed in the context of some projects financed by FCT. Metal matrix nanocomposites reinforced with carbon nanotubes and nanocrystalline metals are another research interest that has been pursued through the development of production techniques, study of structural thermal stability and of deformation mechanisms of thin films and massive materials.
