Academic degrees /titles: Habilitation in Mechanical Engineering (FEUP), PhD in Mechanical Engineering (FEUP), Master in Electrical Engineering (FEUP), Degree in Electrical Engineering (FCT-UC).

He is with the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DEMec), Automation, Instrumentation and Control Group, since 1991. He is currently a Full Professor at DEMec-FEUP. He is an integrated researcher at the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transport and Aerospace(LAETA), Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering (INEGI).

He is the Institutional Coordinator of the research group Intelligent Systems & Control (ISC) / LAETA-INEGI.

His areas of research are Automation, Robotics, Complex Systems Modeling and Fractional Order Systems. He is the author of more than 250 papers in SCI journals (Out. 2025) and of 5 books.

Editor-in-Chief of: Journal of Environmental Accounting and Management (L&H Sci. Pub.) (SCOPUS; JCR), Fractal and Fractional-Section Complexity (SCOPUS; JCR).

He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (L&H Sci.
