Scientific and Technical Activities and Publications

Coordinator of several multiannual research programs as coordinator and (or) principal researcher, both under national and international I&D system. The main areas covered ground characterization, modeling of the behavior of natural and artificially deposited, compacted and improved soils, including mine tailings, seismic analysis, cyclic liquefaction, monotonic and flow liquefaction, behaviour of foundations and deep excavations, with emphasis to residual soils. Presently coordinator in Portugal of EU-H2020 research project “LIQUEFACT: Assessment and mitigation of liquefaction potential across Europe: a holistic approach to protect structures / infrastructures for improved resilience to earthquake-induced liquefaction disaster” and coordinator of European Innovation Partnerships Commitment on Raw Materials – “Rose”: Recycling Of Secondary raw materials for a sustainable optimization of construction processes in civil engineering.

Scientific Publications

Author or coauthor of 107 articles in international journals with referees (83 with Impact Factor. ISI, JRC) and 31 others in national journals; 225 communications published in proceedings of international conferences (21 keynote/special lectures in Nat. & Int. conferences) and 76 in national conferences; 71 technical documents for workshops and courses. (Índice H Scopus = 29, Feb. 2025; ID 7005635575) Author 13 chapters of books and editor of 3 proceedings in international publishers; Author 4 national books and 3 chapters in national books.

Professional Activities

Consultant and practitioner in the specialized areas of advanced laboratory and in-situ testing of soils, foundations and deep excavations, soil-structure interaction analyses, earthquake design of geotechnical structures, including soil liquefaction induced damages and mitigation. Responsible and/or consultant for more than 100 projects of structures and special geotechnical works, including bridge foundations, embankments on soft soils, large excavations and tunnels (Portugal, Algeria, Brazil, Morocco, Mozambique, Poland and Spain). Coordinator of more than 350 experimental projects in LabGeo-FEUP (www.fe.up.pt/labgeo/), being the responsible of the respective formal technical reports. Advisor for risk assessment and safety improvement of more than 50 tailings dams in Brazil. Ad-Hoc Consultant of the Federal Prosecutor's Office (Attorney General) in Brazil, for the elaboration and management of the procedures to be implemented in more than 50 tailings dams in Minas Gerais state, since April 2019 to present.
