Mobility OUT
A mobility period is an opportunity for the student to have new experiences and connect with other cultures, while at the same time complementing their academic training and expanding their skill set by attending one of FEP's partner schools.
Main advantages:
- Extended stay abroad with academic recognition;
- Exemption from tuition payment at the destination university (or payment of tuition by the programme in question) and possibility of receiving a mobility scholarship;
- A gratifying and enriching experience at both an academic and personal level;
- Contact with other methods of teaching and work;
- Refinement/learning of a foreign language;
- Professional valuation and CV enhancement;
- Personal growth and development of capacity for adaptation, flexibility, autonomy, initiative and entrepreneurial spirit;
- Greater employability in national and international markets.
If the student intends to go on mobility to a school with which FEP has no bilateral agreement, there is the possibility apply as a free-mover. This possibility is rather exceptional, being subject to a case-by-case evaluation of the situation proposed by the student. To this end, the student should:
- Validate his aim during the pre-application period, respecting the deadlines and the eligibility criteria defined for regular mobility, selecting the destination option "PHD_OUTROS_FEP";
- Contact the International Mobility Unit of the Academic Services (erasmus@fep.up.pt) before the deadline for applying to regular mobility, identifying the country of destination and, if applicable, the school where the student would like to move, as well as the proposed study plan abroad;
- Make all the contacts related to the mobility process with the destination university, namely to check the candidate's acceptance as free-mover.
The study plan must be validated by FEP and students must meet the eligibility criteria and the application deadlines defined in the call for regular mobility.
This type of mobility does not include exemption from tuition fees at the university of destination, nor is it eligible for the award of an E + grant. However, if the desired option is among one of the University of Porto's partners, FEP may ask for exemption of tuition fees and the student may be eligible for an E + grant if the country of destination belongs to the European Union. In the case of being eligible for an E+ grant, students who pre-applied as free-movers will be ranked after students who pre-applied for regular mobility.

Mobility during doctoral programmes is not subject to a specific call for proposals, as the process must be personalised and be prepared in accordance with the student’s requirements and in close collaboration with the Director of the Doctoral Programme. Nevertheless, it is advisable that students show their formal interest in the first call of applications for mobility that opens every year (usually between December-January) to do a mobility in the next academic year. One of the advantages of this formal application is the possibility to access Erasmus+ grants in case the mobility happens in a EU country.
The application deadlines, access conditions and selection criteria are listed in the ‘Call for proposals’, that can be consulted here .
Doctoral students should therefore start by identifying the university where he/she wishes his/her mobility to be. The university selected may, or may not be, a FEP partner institution. If the student is at the dissertation stage, the identification of the mobility university should include the identification of a lecturer at the host institution, who will supervise the student, while he/she is there. This does not apply in the case of students, who frequent curricular units at the host institution that are equivalent to the curricular units that he/she would have taken at FEP.
The Mobility Section (erasmus@fep.up.pt) should be contacted to facilitate the rest of the process, once the conditions to which the mobility is subject are complied with (agreement of the Director of the Doctoral programme, identification of the host institution and a supervisor if necessary).
Interested students should also consult available information regarding the method of grade conversion, that is, translation of the classifications obtained at the foreign university during the mobility period to the grading scale used by the University of Porto. EUROPEAN DOCTORAL DIPLOMA
In case a student spends a minimum period of 3 months in an international school doing research work for his/her thesis, it allows the student to have, in the end of the doctoral programme, the title "Doutoramento Europeu" (European Doctoral Diploma). The student should contact the Academic Services in this regard to plan his/her stay abroad and fill in a work proposal that can be seen in this link. The regulation about the "Doutoramento Europeu" can be seen here (in Portuguese only). In these cases, there is also the possibility to receive and Erasmus+ grant.
