In line with the philosophy of this Institute, the Animal Facilities actively promote the welfare of laboratory animals, ensuring compliance with the 4Rs principles: Replacement, Reduction, Refinement and Respect.

1 – The ICBAS Animal Facilities are shared institutional services responsible for ensuring the care, housing and welfare of the animals maintained therein. They provide support for scientific research and teaching activities, in accordance with the applicable legislation and ethical standards.

2 – ICBAS comprises four Animal Facility units:

1. Rodent Facility
2. Aquatic Organisms Facility
3. Kennel
4. Large Animal Facility

3 – The operational management of the Animal Facilities is ensured by a Facility Coordinator, appointed by the Director of ICBAS, supported by a supervisory committee, with the organizational structure defined in the corresponding internal regulations.

• On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the general inspection of animals and facilities is carried out by designated staff members.
