Objectives

The objective of the discipline is to integrate and improve the students capacity to apply clinical skills learned in pre-clinical disciplines, as well as to develop clinical thinking and its application in real situations. The work with real cases presented to the UPVet - Veterinary Hospital of the University of Porto, under the supervision of senior staff (teachers and practitioners), allows for the development of communication skills, as well as ethical principles of clinical practice, as important as technical abilities. The activities on hopitalized animals, allways under senior staff supervision, allows for the development of an individual responsability awareness and team work, which constitute the basis of the veterinary clinical activity.

Learning outcomes and competences

The main results of the discipline are the practical acquisition of clinical skills in companion animals of the most common species (dogs, cats, small mammals, reptiles and ornamental birds) in its whole, that is, from the clinical history to the implementation of a therapy, including the execution of general physical examinations, special examinations, elaboration of a differential diagnosis list, planning, execution and interpretation of ancilary exams, elaboration of a therapeutic plan and its execution, when aplicable.

Considering that this is an integrative a practical discipline, it is essential that the students have the basic knowledge and skills in clinical semiology (clinical examination procedures); small animal anesthesia; surgical semiology; diagnostic imaging; small animal surgery and small animal clinical pathology. Furthermore it is essential that students have a clear idea of the ethical and deontological principles of clinical practice.
The students wikl interact directely with animals owners in the context of a real consultation, therefore its imperative that they are fluent in portuguese, beeing able to maintain a fluent conversation. 

Program

Theoretical teaching: Speciality themes:
Opthalmology: Clinical approach to orbital and ocular pain; red eye and discharge; blindness.
Dermathology: Clinical presentation and therapeutic approach to ear problems, parasitic, infectious, fungal and immune-mediated skin diseases.
Oncology: Approach to the cancer patient; Oncologic therapy, Mos common neoplstic disease in companion animals 

Practical teaching: Students will be involved in the daily routine work of a small animal veterinary hospital with emergency services (with 12-hour rotation shifts,  7 days/week), as well as case presentations and discussions and Journal Clubs.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical: Explanation of the protocols of investigation, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of the mentioned specialities. Supervised case-studies representatives of the mentioned specialities.

Practical: Supervised practice in real cases asttended in the UPVet veterinary hospital. Management and treatment of hospitalized animals. Presentation and discussion of clinical cases presented in the hospital practice classes. Elaboration of reports of cases assisted in UPVet consults.

Eligibility for exams

In order to be admitted to the final exam, the student must, cumulatively:
1- Present evidence of having performed  the following clinical procedures  by submitting the procedures register dully signed:
a) One assistance and two participations in routine or follow-up consultation
b) One assistance and two participations in consultation for clinical reason
c) One assistance and one participation in imaging procedure
d) Two assistances and three participations in isolated technical procedures
e) One assistance and one participation in surgical procedure
f) Present two clinical reports of cases assistid during the pratical classes 

2- Have no more than 10% absences in the previewed hospitalization services.
3- Have no more than 30% absences in practical classes of any kind.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final score will be the summ of the grades obtained by each student in the Final exam (FE) that will take place at the end of the semester; written pratical exame (PE) that will take place at the end of the semester- added to the presentation and discussion of 1 clinical case (CP) and the elaboration of 2 clinical reports (CR) of cases assisted during the pratical classes in the hospital. 

The weight of each component will be:
1. FE: 10 points (minimum of 5 for approval)
2. PE: 6 points (minimum of 3 for approval)
3. CP: 3 points (no minimum for approval)
3. CR: 1 points (no minimum for approval)

The scoring of case presentations follow the criteria:

Presentation/discussion quality and content (6/10 points)

Clarity in the presentation and discussion (4/10 point)

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

According to the aplicable legislation.

Classification improvement

Students that wish to improve their scores in the final examination may do it in the "appeal period".

Observations

Its required that students are fluent in portuguese, both in written and conversation.
