Objectives
The student must acquire the following basic cytogenetic capacities/knowledge: morphological, structural and functional organization of chromosomes, mutations that can change this organization and application of these knowledge to veterinary pathology, with a particular incidence in fertility problems and tumoral situations.
Learning outcomes and competences
It is expected that the students acquire the fundamental basis of cytogenetics in order to apply them in future programs of advanced genetics.

Program
Theorical programme: Cell Cycle: modifications during mitosis and meiosis. Chromosome morphology and structure. Euchromatin and heterochromatin. Numerical and structural chromosome abnormalities. Sex chromosomes. Sexual determination and sexual diferentiation. Mutagenesis. Genotoxic agents. Chromosome instability and cancer. Practical programme: basic cytogenetic techniques. Classification and identification of chromosomes in the karyotype. Chromosome banding techniques. In situ hybridization techniques applied to cytogenetics. Techniques for comparative genomics. Cytogenetic nomenclature and karyotype description with balanced and non-balanced chromosome abnormalities. Analysis of the consequences of balanced chromosomal abnormalities (inversions and translocations) in gamete segregation.
