Objectives

KNOWLEDGE: This course aims to address the current need to learn more about biomedical and biotechnological progress, so that students can ground their opinions about these issues on solid knowledge. Students should develop their skills for reflective thought and increase their interest in current issues that require thorough debate

UNDERSTANDING: Students are expected to improve their knowledge about new scientific topics as well as to be able to set up connections among the various concepts used in class discussions from a bioethical perspective.

ANALYSIS: Students should be able to improve the skills required to analyze and deliberate about different ethical problems. The main objective is to make them to go further in discussion of topics conveyed by the mass media, so their discussion on these topics can be based on concepts and theories. Students should be aware of the need to justify one’s opinions and to reflect in order to be able to provide good and accurate arguments.

Learning outcomes and competences

 The student has already a formed idea about some concepts and themes of Bioethics. The social diffusion of the issues, leads to the fact students have already assume a position about them. So, the discipline increases the individual need of reasoning. At the end of the course the expected results are: (1) capacity for analysis and reflection; (2) encouragement and willingness to diversify the areas of knowledge; (3) ability to structure ideas and thoughts; (4) willingness to support and solidify positions (“for” or “against”).

Program

Foundations of Clinical Ethics . The course will study ethical principles for the development of knowledge and skills relevant to health care ethics. Course topics will include (1) normative ethics: Utilitarianism, deontological and virtue ethics approach ; (2) The (bio)ethical principialism and (3) The history of medical ethics and bioethics.

Methods in Clinical Ethics  This unit will be a study of the core areas of knowledge which are essential for ethical

decision making, using a Moral Case Deliberation (MCD) approach..

Patient-doctor relationship, informed Consent and  communication This unit aims to study the autonomy principle, the informed consent element and the challenges of a shared decision making.together with important issues regarding the communication with patients ann other team members

Confidentiality, good practice in handling patient information Ethical and legal issues regarding confidentiality of data and patient´s privacy

Research Ethics and Research Integrity: legal and ethical frameworks regarding the main issues of research ethics and research integrity will be presented and discussed with the students

Justice and equality  An examination of philosophical, and policy perspectives on theoretical understandings of justice and on practical issues involving the allocation and delivery of health care resources.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course is structured in lectures and seminars. In the lectures, it is presented the theory on different themes (in white); in the seminars will be develop a discussion on the topic previously presented, boosted by oriented readings and case presentations.
