Introduction to Tropical Health having in mind the Global Health approach. An important part of the World population lacks proper health care. The poorest among the poor are particularly vulnerable. Medicine without Borders (emergency and development) may reduce the burden of daily life for millions worldwide. This subject aims to introduce the future MDs with topics on tropical health, and the existing opportunities in the developing world, particularly in Africa.

The tropical belt: from the exotic and diverse environment to the constant poverty. The disease triad in the developing world: malaria, diarrhea and respiratory. The Millennium Objectives and the world health. Did the Bamako Initiative improved the health status? Typical health care structure: traditional healers village health workers and midwives, nurses, rural and urban doctors, health centers, hospitals. The role of the WHO, UNICEF, NGOs and philanthropy (e.g. Gates Foundation, Aga Khan Foundation). Infectious and non-infections diseases and vaccination. Water and sanitation, the great challenge. Balance between prevention and treatment: the difficult choice. Tropical neglected diseases and chronic poverty: from helminthic infectious to trypanosome, from dengue to schistosomiasis, through cholera and ebola. Future perspectives in a changing world.
