Continuing the unit of Histology and Embryology Animal I, the aims are teach the differential microanatomy of the organs and to understand their histophysiology, based on the study of species of veterinary interest. Addiitonally, we promote as understanding the usefulness of cytology as a diagnostic tool, exemplifying the characteristics of cytological preparations from different organs. We want the students to learn the descriptive embryology of species of veterinary interest.
After ending this unit, students must:
- recognize the microanatomical elements of each organ (in a healthy state).
- identify the different types of cells in cytological samples of various organs, understanding the advantages and drawbacks of the use of cytology.
- understand how organs are organized, the main characteristics of each cell and which are their functions.
- know the embriology of each organ.
HISTOLOGY module
Digestive tract and accessory glands, respiratory system, urinary system, endocrine glands, male reproductive system, female reproductive system, mammary gland, eye, ear.
CYTOLOGY module
Advantages an drawbacks of cytology as a diagnostic technique. Sampling procedures, main types of lesions. Appearence of cytological samples taken from lymph node, salivary gland, liver, kidney, testis and vagina.
EMBRYOLOGY module
Introduction to the study of Embryology. Gametogenesis, ovulation, fertilization, cleavage, morula, blastula and implantation. Bilaminar germ disk. Gastrulation and the trilaminar germ disk. Embryological periods: pre-embryonic period; embryonic period; foetal period. Embryonic adnexa (foetal membranes, placenta and umbilical cord). Differences between species (dog, cat, cow, horse, pig and ewe). Teratology and brief description of some common malformations. Skeletal system, muscle system, serous cavities, cardiovascular system, digestive system, head and neck, ear, eye, skin and appendages, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system. Urinary system. Reproductive system.
Lectures (expository) and practical sessions (viewing images, histological preparations and discussion of differential diagnosis, visualization of pieces of embryology).

No failure by faults, with participation in at least three quarters of the practical lessons provided. Condition for access to practical examination: to obtain a minimum score of 9.5 on the written test.
Rating = (Grade of the theory test* x 0.35) + (0.45 x Grade of the practical test) + (Minitests** x 0.20). Each note is given parcel in the range of 0 to 20.
* The student may choose to perform 2 theoretical frequencies in certain times, no minimum score, but whose average must be higher than 9.5, or perform one final theoretical test at exam time.
** Four or five small tests made during the lessons.
Students from other years ("repeaters") may choose to perform again the attendance of practical classes.
1) Theoretical test - "american" type test with 50 questions. Each question has 5 alternatives, of which only one is correct. Several alternatives can be chosen - the correct one worths 100% of the question (0.4 points); each one the non-correct ones values -25% (-0.1 points).
2) Practical exam - based on the projection of images, in the computer, for diagnosing histological structures. Addresses at least 5 topics / sections, each worth 4 points. Each section is subdivided into eight questions. The actual duration of the practical test is about 45 minutes.
The exams will be carried out in computers, using the Moodle.
Continuous assessment is reflected in the resolution of mini-tests throughout the practical classes. No special works are requested.
The tests listed above are for students who undergo examination at regular times (normal and "recurso"). In this vein, special tests ordered, for example, by associative leaders, may be of different types, according to a model / type to be determined by the teachers, and may well consist of written tests theoretical and practical, theoretical and practical projection, direct histological examination with the microscope slides, etc. The marking of the tests is the responsibility of teachers according to their availability and times of occupation of spaces for examination, with information to the applicants by sending a personal e-mail, using the directions given by ICBAS, contained in the record students (SIGARRA) .
Doing new final tests (either theoretical, either practical).
