The main objectives of this curricular unit are the study of plant physiology and the adaptations of vascular plants to aquatic environments and costal dunes.
Students should acquire basic knowledge about plant metabolism and physiology, and understand the adaptations of vascular plants to aquatic environments, saline soils and costal dunes. They should also recognise some aquatic plants and species of sand dunes flora.
1) Taxonomic distribution of aquatic plants. 2) General characteristics of different types of aquatic plants (hydrophytes): emergent plants, plants fixed to the substrate with floating leaves, plants permanently submerged and floating plants. 3) Morphological features of different types of leaves: aerial, floating and submerged. 4) Characteristics of submerged stems and roots. 5) Examples of structural and functional adaptations to reproduction in aquatic plants. 6) The halophytes and their structural and biochemical adaptations to saline environments. 7) Dune plants and their adaptation to this environment. 8) Photosynthesis: molecular structure of chloroplast pigments; photons capture by antenna complexes and energy transfer to the reaction center of photosystems I and II; electron transport from water molecule to the synthesis of NADPH; the formation of the proton gradient and ATP production in chloroplasts; cyclic electron transport; the Calvin cycle. 9) Photorespiration. 10) Plants with C3, C4 and CAM metabolism. 11) Basic concepts of plant nutrition. 12) Plant hormones and their biological effects: auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid and ethylene. 13) Phototropism, geotropism and heliotropism. 14) Photoperiod and flowering in plants. 15) The phytochrome and its biological effects. 16) Basic concepts in phytoremediation.
