Objectives
A. To initiate the study of the animal morphology and the student’s contact with animals of several species.
B.To know the morphological characteristics and aptitudes of the principal Portuguese and exotic breeds of animals belonging to bovine, zebu, equine, asinine, mules, sheep, goat, pig, rabbits, poultry, canine and feline species.
C.To know some animal management practices.
Learning outcomes and competences
Be able to:
- Recognize the morphological characteristics and aptitudes of the more relevant Portuguese and exotic breeds for the main domestic species: cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, hares, poultry, dogs and cats.
- Recognize the legal methods for animals identification in the different species;
-determine the approximate age of an animal by observing its dentition;
-Recognize some husbandry practices.
-Recognize the main characteristics of some species of fish.

8. Equine, asinine and mules species: General characteristics; Portuguese breeds; Main world breeds.
9. Sheep and goat species: General characteristics; Portuguese breeds; Main world breeds.
10. Pig species: General characteristics; Portuguese breeds; Main
world breeds.
11. Morphological characters of rabbits. Main breeds.
12. Morphological characters of birds. Main chicken breeds.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The lectures are supported by the use of overheads, slides, videos, and multimedia. The material used in lectures is provided in full to students The practical teaching consists in practical classes at the Campus Agrário de Vairão (horses, cattle, small ruminants), at the ICBAS Kennel and study visits (Poultry, rabbits and fish).
