Objectives

The curricular unit Dissertation is planned for individual work of research and development of original experimental character leading to the writing of a scientific dissertation. The theme should be in the area of the degree, aiming at the integration and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired throughout the course for the resolution of complex problems of bioengineering. The work shall consist of research and/or technological development, involving experimental means and/or simulation. It should promote the development of capacity for initiative, decision-making, innovation, creative and critical thinking.

The public presentation and defense of the  Thesis will be held in March 2019 in the case of Theses corresponding to the first semester or in July 2019 in the case of Theses corresponding to the second semester.

The dates for the submission of the provisional version of the thesis will be defined by the Scientific Committee of MIB, but should, in principle, be in the month prior to the defense, that is, end of February (first semester) and end of June (second semester). Until the deadline the student should delivered 3 paper copies in the secretariat of the course.

The dates of delivery of the provisional version of the dissertation will be: end of February (first semestre) and until 13 June (second semestre). Students who wish to defend the thesis in period for conclusion of the course, shall deliver the provisional version until 15 September. Until these dates they should provide a pdf to the lecturers of the UC and the supervisor. The paper copies can be subsequently delivered to the secretariat of the course.

After the defense of the thesis, and for the purposes of oficial filing (Library of ICBAS, National Library, the Center for Science and Higher Education), it is necessary to send to Academic Services (Division of Pre-graduation), the following, after the introduction of any changes indicated by the jury during the defense:

final version of the thesis: (i) TWO copies (ICBAS+BN), (ii) THREE on CD in PDF format (ICBAS, BN and OCES), duly validated by the president of the jury.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The Dissertation work must be carried out through the individualized guidance to each student by a supervisor and, where appropriate, co-supervisor. The work can be carried out in an academic environment or academic and company/hospital. In the latter case the objectives, nature and form of monitoring of the work shall be subject to a prior agreement between the student and advisors on the part of the School and the company/hospital (the model contract will be provided by the secretariat of course), and validated by the Director of the Course in order to ensure the attainment of the objectives of the curricular unit, and protect any issues of confidentiality on the part of the company/host institution.
