Molecular Biology

Acronym: BMOL
Person in Charge: Jorge Eduardo Azevedo
Mission: The Department of Molecular Biology is responsible for teaching and research in various fields such as Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biological Engineering. Currently, it has 17 faculty/research members (4 Full Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, 1 Principal Researcher, and 2 Assistant Researchers), along with several guest faculty and researchers and 5 technical staff. The Department of Molecular Biology is responsible for dozens of curricular units taught in various programs, such as the Integrated Master’s in Medicine, the Integrated Master’s in Veterinary Medicine, the Bachelor's and Master’s in Biochemistry, the Bachelor's and Master’s in Bioengineering, and the Integrated Master’s in Dental Medicine, among others, including several doctoral programs.

Research at the Department of Molecular Biology covers various topics, including: structural, biochemical, genetic, and pathological mechanisms of Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy; neurodegeneration and neuroprotection; regulation of gene expression; RNA biology; regulation of mitosis; structure and function of the mitochondrial respiratory chain; immune response to intracellular infections; biogenesis and function of organelles; ubiquitination and glycosylation of proteins; molecular mechanisms associated with oxidative stress; cancer; biomaterials, biofabrication, and tissue regeneration; and risk perception and communication. As a result of numerous research projects led by the department’s faculty/researchers, about seventy scientific articles are published annually in indexed journals.

The scientific activities of the Department of Molecular Biology are carried out at ICBAS and in research institutes of the University of Porto (e.g., IBMC, INEB, IPATIMUP, i3S), where most of the department's faculty/research laboratories are located.

The Department of Molecular Biology actively promotes science outreach. Its faculty/researchers frequently organize conferences, symposia, and roundtable discussions, as well as various initiatives aimed at secondary education. These actions include visits to several schools, organizing events specifically for teachers, and “open days” where research laboratories are shown to students and teachers.
