Mission: | The Department of Molecular Biology is responsible for teaching and research in various areas such as Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biological Engineering. Currently, it has 17 faculty/researchers (4 Full Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 6 Assistant Professors, 1 Principal Researcher, and 2 Assistant Researchers), several guest lecturers and researchers, and 4 technicians. The Department of Molecular Biology is responsible for teaching dozens of courses in various programs such as the Integrated Master's in Medicine, the Integrated Master's in Veterinary Medicine, the Bachelor's and Master's in Biochemistry, the Bachelor's and Master's in Bioengineering, among others, including several doctoral programs. Research at the Department of Molecular Biology addresses various topics, including: structural, biochemical, genetic, and pathological mechanisms of Familial Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy; mitosis regulation; structure and function of the mitochondrial respiratory chain; immune response to intracellular infections; organelle biogenesis and function; protein ubiquitination; molecular mechanisms associated with oxidative stress; cancer; tissue regeneration; and risk perception and communication. As a result of the numerous research projects led by the faculty/researchers of the department, around seventy scientific articles are published annually in indexed journals. The scientific activity of the Department of Molecular Biology is carried out at ICBAS and research institutes of UP (e.g., IBMC, INEB, IPATIMUP, i3S), where the research laboratories of most faculty/researchers of the department are located. The Department of Molecular Biology actively promotes the dissemination of Science. Its faculty/researchers frequently organize congresses, symposiums, and roundtable discussions, as well as various activities aimed at Secondary Education. These actions include visits to several schools, organization of events specifically for teachers, and "open days" during which research laboratories are showcased to students and teachers. |
