Objectives

1) To acquire general and applied knowledge on the integrated management of oceans and their importance for smart, sustainable and inclusive economic growth;
2) To aquire skills to identify and analyse key strategic benchmarks, at European and national level, relevant to the integrated management of oceans and their resources;
3) To encourage and develop the ability of students to discuss issues related to ocean governance, and to be active agents in promoting communication, sensibilization and mobilization of society to the sea;
4) Develop individual and team work skills.

Learning outcomes and competences

The syllabus will allow the acquisition of knowledge at the level of 2nd cycle in Integrated Ocean Management, through the presentation and discussion of a set of strategic benchmarks, at European and national level, relevant to the management of oceans and their resources. It will be given particular emphasis on the perspective of the EU Integrated Maritime Policy, based on the recognition that all matters related to oceans and seas require an integrated and intersectoral approach, environmentally sustainable and based on excellence in scientific research. The content will include an analysis of the current landscape of the scientific research and technological development in Marine Sciences (institutions, infrastructures, knowledge networks, funding mechanisms) at the national and international context. The themes will be presented and discussed so that students recognize the importance of the seas and oceans as engines of the economy with a high potential for innovation and growth.

Teaching methods and learning activities

1) Interactive lectures for presentatin and discusssion of the syllabus;
2) Lectures for presentation and discussion of case studies stimulating the active participation of the students;
3) Individual work carried out autonomously (seminar component) by students on a topic of their choice under the Integrated Management of the Oceans, presentation and discussion of work at the end of the semester.
