Objectives

The main objective is to teach the structure of cells, tissues and organs, mostly at the level of light microscopy. It is intended to furnish basis for a better understanding of Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology and Pathology are furnished. The practical component consists of the study of cells, tissues and organs, under light microscope, by using different staining techniques.

Learning outcomes and competences

After ending this unit, students must:

-recognize the characteristics and elements of different tissues.

-identify the different types of cells in the tissues.

-understand how organs the nervous system, lymphoid organs and skin are organized, the main characteristics of their cells functions.

Working method

Presencial

Program

Histology module
It covers mostly the General Histology: Introductory lecture; epithelial tissue, connective tissue; adipose tissue; cartilage; bone and ossification; muscular tissue; nervous tissue; blood; bone marrow and hematopoiesis; circulatory system; immune system and lymphoid organs; skin. (NOTE: The program stated here is a short one; a more detailed version is available elsewhere).

Eligibility for exams

The frequency attaining is positive if students do not miss 1/4 of the practical lessons.

Calculation formula of final grade

Rating = (Grade of the theory test* x 0.375) + (0.425 x Grade of the practical test) + (Minitests** x 0.20). Each note is given parcel in the range of 0 to 20.

* The student may choose to perform 2 theoretical frequencies in certain times, no minimum score, but whose average must be higher than 9.5, or perform one final theoretical test at exam time.

** Five small tests performed in practical classes (resolution of minitests during the lessons).

Students from other years ("repeaters") may choose to perform again the attendance of practical classes.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Theory test - "American" style (multiple choice) with 50 questions. Each question has five alternatives of which only one is correct. You can choose to point the options of your wish - a correct answer is worth 100% (0.4 points); each wrong answer is worth -25% (-0.1 points). The test takes a total of 60 minutes.

Practical exam - based on the projection of images, in computer, for diagnosing histological structures (answers are wrriten in a form). Addresses at least 5 topics / sections, each worth 4 points. Each section is subdivided into eight questions. The actual duration of the practical test is about 60 (and upt to 90) minutes. Continuous assessment is reflected in the resolution of mini-tests throughout the practical classes. No special works are requested.

Exams will be performed in computers, using Moodle platform.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The tests listed above are for students who undergo examination at regular times. In this vein, special tests ordered, for example, by workers or associative leaders may be of different types, according to a model / type to be determined by the teachers, and may well consist of written tests theoretical and practical, theoretical and practical projection, direct histological examination with the microscope slides, etc. The marking of the tests is the responsibility of teachers according to their availability and times of occupation of spaces for examination, with information to the applicants by sending a personal e-mail, using the directions given by ICBAS, contained in the record students (SIGARRA) .

Classification improvement

Doing new final tests (either theoretical, either practical).

Observations

The Regents waive all often repeating students to attend practical classes. However, are subject to the valuation rules laid down for the current academic year. Once in previous academic years there was no continuous evaluation for participation during the lessons, repeaters are based on the rating of 0 this component. If the repeat attendance in class will have a rating.
