Students should acquire basic knowledge about algae and protozoans, their biological diversity, life cycles, taxonomy and phylogeny.
Students should acquire the basic concepts on cladistics, being able to understand the current classification of protist groups. Students should also be able to recognise the main phyla of protists and the most common species of macroalgae present in the intertidal zone of the North of Portugal.
1) Introduction to protistology: the concept of protist and basic Cladistics. 2) General overview of the major lineages of eukaryotes according to recent phylogenetic hypotheses: the super-groups Plastidophyla, Stramenopiles, Alveolata, Rhizaria, Excavata, Opisthokonta and Amoebozoa 3) The origins of plastids from symbiosis with cyanobacteria; the Glaucophyta. 4) The major Plastidophyla clades: Rhodophyta, Chloroplastida, Haptophyta and Cryptophyta. 5) Characterization of the most relevant protist clades within the Chloroplastida: the prasinophycean clades; Chlorophyta (Chlorophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae and Ulvophycea); Streptophyta (Zygnematophyceae, Coleochaetophyceae, Charales). 6) The Stramenopiles: Chrysophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Raphidophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Dictyochophycea, Oomycota and Hyphochytridiomycota. 7) The Alveolata: Ciliophora, Dinoflagellata, Perkinsidae and Apicomplexa. 8) Characterization of the major groups included in Rhizaria: Cercozoa, Foraminifera, Radiolaria and Haplosporidia. 9) General characterization of the Excavata with special reference to the Euglenozoa. 9) General aspects of the Amoebozoa with special reference to the Mycetozoa. 10) Major protist clades within the Opisthokonta: microsporidia and choanoflagellates.
Theoretical classes; laboratory classes dedicated to the observation and identification of protozoans, marine and freshwater algae.
