Objectives

This subject follows Compared Histology and Embriology I and is expected that students acquire skills and abilities of microscopy observation, making possible the diagnosis of vertebrates organs and the deduction of their histophysiology, based on the morphological and staining characteristics.

To demonstrate the practical use of knowing the microanatomy of normal tissues, considering the several potential modifications, including teratological aspects in embryology.

To show several models of embryological development, discussing evolutionary aspects and correlating descriptive embryology with the final anatomy.

To stimulate critical thinking.

To stimulate integrative knowledge.

THEORETICAL (PART A) AND PRACTICAL
Digestive tract.
Glands associated to the digestive tract.
Sense organs.
Endocrine glands.
Urinary apparatus.
Male and female reproductive apparatus.
Study of the special histology of bivalves.
Study of the special histology of peneidean crustacea.

THEORETICAL (PART B)
Introduction to the Embryology.
Fertilization and gametes.
Larvae. Cellular basis of morphogenesis.
Cleavage: creation of multicellularity.
Environmental regulation of development.
Mechanisms of development and evolution.
Embryology of invertebrates: Porifera, Cnidaria, Curstacea, Equinodermata.
Embryology of vertebrates: Fish, Amphibian, Avian and Reptiles, Mammals.

Eligibility for exams

As to the Law (See regulation of the U.Porto).
Critical presentation of two (2) cientific papers.

Calculation formula of final grade

Classification in theoretical test x 0,40 + Classification in practical test x 0,35 + Articles + Participation

The "Participation", according to the number of presences in classes, degree of self-commitment, and quality of participation in classes, can reach a maximum value of 1 point. Each "Article" can reach 2 points. The student passes if he/she manages to reach a minimum of 9.50 points, after the application of the formula.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Planning and presentation of scientific papers (two per student).

Observation of maintenance and reproduction of the model zebrafish to follow the respective embryogenesis. [The students may be required to visit the UTAD, at Vila Real.]

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

After approval to a discipline, the student can attempt to improve its first grade. Eventually, the student can attempt to improve the previous mark of just one of the exams, either the theory or the practical exam.

Classification improvement

All students that are entitled by law to special examinations will perform them upon official request, in a date announced by the responsible teacher, in accordance with the rules of the ICBAS.

Observations

The grades of the several evaluation components can pass from one examination term and/or scholar year. Anyway, this possibility must be confirmed with the responsible teacher at the beginning of each scholar year. This confirmation is to be made because eventual changes in the programme and/or evaluation rules of the Histology and Embryology course can impair such transference of previous grades. In a certain examination term, the student may choose to make just one of the requests examinations.
