Global climate change and pollution: challenges for the immune system, RNA metabolism and stress responses

Global climate change and pollution have been causing considerable environmental changes, increasing threats to health as understood in the One Health concept. For example: the reduction in biodiversity affecting vital ecosystems, the quantity and quality of water with a strong impact on public health and water security, and food security, with direct implications for human and animal health; the increase in the incidence of diseases (e.g., chronic diseases, zoonoses), the emergence of new diseases, including pandemics, among many others, affecting public health. The main objectives and strategies of this continuing education unit are to provide training on major current paradigms and challenges and to contribute to increasing the internationalisation of the University of Porto, since, in addition to providing training to students in doctoral programmes at the University of Porto, it is also aimed at students in doctoral programmes at foreign or international universities (e.g., EC Erasmus Mundus +).

Partner Institutions:

  • CIIMAR, U.Porto;
  • i3S, U.Porto.

Objectives

  1. Acquire knowledge and practical training, including laboratory training, on the effects of changes resulting from global climate change and pollution, with a special emphasis on environmental contaminants that raise serious concerns for environmental, animal and human health, in accordance with the One Health concept, approaches and methodologies to assess different types of effects (e.g. neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, oxidative stress, gene expression, etc.) and solutions for the prevention and treatment of disease, including pandemics caused by biological agents (e.g. mRNA vaccines);
  2. Develop cross-cutting skills, including autonomy, teamwork in a multidisciplinary and multicultural context, and communication, among others.

1.1.2. In the case of applicants with pre-Bologna Bachelor's and Master's degrees or pre-Bologna Bachelor's and post-Bologna Master's degrees: final Bachelor's degree average + 0.5 points.
