Animal Science

InformationThe course/SC is accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

The doctoral Programme in Animal Science is accredited by the Portuguese Agency for the Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) and aims to promote advanced training in the field of Animal Science through research. This programme aims to achieve levels of excellence, with the supervision of researchers associated with research institutions, including several Associated Laboratories, of recognised merit at national and international level, in the different specialities of Animal Science.
The Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) is a Faculty of the University of Porto recognised for its multidisciplinary characteristics in the field of Life Sciences, which is reflected in the innovative educational, scientific and cultural project that led to the formation of the institution. As the only Portuguese school to offer Medicine and Veterinary Medicine courses alongside Biochemistry, Bioengineering and Aquatic Sciences, ICBAS is particularly well placed to contribute effectively to the new challenges of Animal Science: the sustainable production of safe food products of animal origin, using innovative production techniques capable of improving feed efficiency, animal health and welfare, while minimising environmental impact.
The ICBAS doctoral Programme in Animal Science is part of the national training network in the area of Animal Biology and Production Systems, providing the opportunity to catapult applications and developments from areas such as Veterinary Medicine, Bioengineering, Biology, Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biochemistry into Animal Science. From a vertical integration perspective, it also provides the natural platform for advanced training for graduates or Masters students from a variety of courses such as Veterinary Medicine, Zootechnical Engineering, Agronomic Engineering, Biology, Environmental and Marine Sciences, Biochemistry, Bioengineering and Chemistry, among others. This wide range of experience will create a productive atmosphere in an excellent working environment, encouraging students to obtain high-quality international scientific training.
The ICBAS doctoral Programme in Animal Science, through well-established collaborations with the main players in the sector, guarantees cutting-edge scientific training in research techniques as well as transferable personal and professional skills.
The Doctoral Programme is made up of a 1st period consisting of an annual curricular unit, known as the ‘Probationary Year’, with no fixed curricular units, and the transfer of professional and scientific skills is carried out on a voluntary basis. This modality allows students to undertake personalised initial training through courses, classes and/or workshops that can be completed in a single semester or over two semesters, up to a maximum of 30 credits. The remaining 30 credits of the 1st year necessarily include preparatory work (of a laboratory or other type of research) to support the work leading to the doctoral thesis. The following three years (180 credits) are dedicated to the preparation of an original thesis appropriate to one of the branches of knowledge envisaged in the area of Animal Science.

Partner Institutions: The PDCA's main partners are: REQUIMTE; CIIMAR; B2E - Collaborative Laboratory for the Blue Bioeconomy; CoLAB FeedInov - Association for research and innovation in animal nutrition; and industrial partners.

Objectives

The PhD in Animal Science promotes advanced training focused on research in order to understand animal biology and respond to local and global challenges in the animal sector: the sustainable production of safe food products, using innovative production techniques capable of improving feed efficiency, animal health and welfare, while minimising environmental impact.

This programme has been designed to achieve levels of excellence, with ICBAS researchers associated with research institutions and Associated Laboratories (CIMAR, REQUIMTE), of recognised national and international merit, in the different specialities of Animal Science, providing guidance.

Fields of Specialization

The Doctoral Programme in Animal Science aims to promote advanced training through research. This programme includes specialisations in Genetics and Breeding; Morphology and Physiology; Nutrition; Production Systems; and Animal Product Technology.

Among other requirements laid down in the Specific Regulations of the Doctoral Programme in Animal Science, the absolute condition for submitting the thesis to public examinations is the inclusion in it of at least 1 (one) original article (full length paper) published or accepted for publication in an indexed international journal (SCI), whose 1st author is the doctoral student.

Professional Abilities

PhD students graduating from this programme should demonstrate:

  • Advanced mastery of key areas of Animal Science and methodological skills for autonomous and innovative research.
  • The ability to communicate scientifically, both written and orally, to specialised and non-specialised audiences.
  • Aptitude for knowledge transfer, with a focus on innovation and collaboration with the academic, productive and political sectors.
  • Commitment to ethics and social responsibility, particularly in animal welfare, sustainability and scientific integrity.

Management and leadership skills, including project planning, attracting funding and multidisciplinary teamwork.

Employment Prospects

The PDCA prepares professionals for various fields: academia, research centres, industry, governmental and non-governmental agencies. Holders of the degree can work in animal and human nutrition, genetics, animal production and food processing companies. They are also qualified to work in government agencies regulating the production and commercialisation of animal products, health control, animal welfare and public information.

Alternative:

  • Academic research in state, regional and local or private institutions
  • Research and innovation in the agri-food sector (raw materials companies; animal and human nutrition; animal production; processing and conservation of animal products; biotechnology)
  • Data management and processing (technology companies)
  • Zoology (nature parks; animal recovery and preservation centres; aquariums and oceanariums; zoos)
  • Service provision (equipment; analysis; quality control and management; sales and support services; regulation, administration and inspection);
  • Environmental education (advanced scientific communication in the field of animal science)
