INTEGRATED MASTER IN MEDICINE

Director’s Testimony

ICBAS was created in 1975 to materialize a model of integrated medical education in an open perspective of knowledge from various fields of life and health sciences. Conceived by its founders, Professors Corino de Andrade and Nuno Grande, this model was inspired in the thinking and action of ICBAS’ patron, Professor Abel Salazar. The iconic phrase he used: “A doctor who only knows medicine, not even knows medicine” became the school's motto and shaped students and teachers who developed their academic activity there.

The integration of the University Hospital Center of Porto in this project, as a nuclear institution in the participation of clinical training, closed the indispensable circle for the medical education and allowed to establish partnerships with other health units, both in Primary Health Care and Hospitals.

Currently, the ICBAS’ Integrated Master of Medicine is evolving with the introduction of a new curriculum, which combines a robust core with an optional curriculum, thus creating a model in which each student becomes co-responsible for his study plan. We consider that this new curriculum will be differentiator and will be an asset to our medical students, future doctors of the 21st century. The student's framing in our training model goes far beyond activity in a central and university hospital and coexists with realities of hospitals with less technical differentiation, general and family medicine units, public health and basic, continuous and palliative care units. Our intention is to contribute to a comprehensive training in the various frameworks of medical practice and to prepare our students for the new challenges future doctors will face.

Since we have a modern and well-equipped Simulation Center, students have early access to models and scenarios that will enable them to train, practice and differentiate themselves in gestures or attitudes, which will allow them to acquire adequate performance and clinical practice in more advanced stages, without having to disturb patients' tranquility.

The development of scientific research is also encouraged, which has been a reality, substantiated by the publication of articles in journals or other scientific publications, with students as co-authors. These conditions favor the interest of young masters in medicine in the development of research projects.

We also want our students to feel good about the space they attend by providing adequate, comfortable and well-equipped facilities. One of our main concerns regarding the huge housing shortage for displaced and economically fragile students has been overcome by a recent agreement with Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto which immediately made available rooms for ICBAS students with these needs.

We are preparing the doctors of the new millennium. We count on everyone to materialize this ambitious project.

Language requirements

Studies Placement
Language of instruction 1 Level Mandatory Language of instruction Level Mandatory
Portuguese A2 NO Portuguese A2 YES
  • At ICBAS, all the courses are lectured in Portuguese and we do not have a separate English language regime since we believe that the spirit of mobility is to integrate foreign students with our Portuguese students. It is also important to point out that, in the context of clinical education, students are in direct contact with patients, in which the fluency of the Portuguese language is fundamental;
  • Even if some professors could can give some support in English, the candidates must perform a Portuguese language coursebefore the mobility or after arrival at Porto and present the language certificate to ICBAS Mobility Office;
  • Fluency in English may be very important in the study, which may contain some untranslated bibliographies.
  • The University of Porto in collaboration with our Faculty of Arts provides language courses for mobility students with some discount (https://sigarra.up.pt/up/en/web_base.gera_pagina?p_pagina=internacional-info-util-aprender-portugues

4th and 5th years (ERASMUS + STUDIES | COOPERATION AGREEMENTS  | ALMEIDA GARRETT

Disciplines Particularaties
Medicine I (4th year) Composed by several modules, which students can perform individually: Cardiology, Pneumology, Dermatology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Hematology

Medicine II (5th year) Composed by several modules, which students can perform individually: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Clinical Immunology, Oncology and Infectious Diseases
Surgery II (5th year)

Composed by several modules, however the students can only perform individually : General Surgery, and Urology

Regarding the other themes of this course (Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Anesthesiology), they cannot be attended separately. In this cases, we recommend the students to attend these areas resourcing to the optional courses (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Angiology and Vascular Surgery and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine I or II).
Options (OPT)

One semester: the students may choose 1 OPT

Annual period: the students may choose 2 OPTs
Clinical Neurosciences

Composed two modules, which students can perform individually: Neurology and Neurosurgery

The disciplines of 4th and 5th year could be frequented during the 1st or 2nd semester (with the exception of some optionals with part I and II), based on the maximum number of credits for this purpose (42 ECTS / semester and 75 ECTS / year). These years also present a particularity called "PRIMERS", which corresponds to the first two weeks of each semester, during which the students attend only theoretical classes of all courses they are enrolled. The practical classes will only begin after this period.

IMPORTANT NOTE: By default, a curricular course involves some kind of continuous and/or final evaluation, either theoretical and/or practical. Final approval is the condition for recognition that a certain number of ECTS were made successfully. Those ECTS are informed in the final Transcript of Records.

If a student decides only to attend classes and not be subjected to the expected evaluation, or if the student does not reach the minimum grade for approval, we will inform in the final Transcript of Records that the student failed the course and ECTS credits will not be awarded.

Upon reception of the Transcript of Records by the home universities, these may request us additional information, such as confirmation of class attendance. The mobility student (himself, herself) cannot make us additional requests besides those informed. The Transcript of Records is an official document automated generated by our information system and cannot be changed.

6th year (ERASMUS + STUDIES AND PLACEMENT | COOPERATION AGREEMENTS  | ALMEIDA GARRETT )

Prerequisites – before de beginning of the mobility at ICBAS the candidate must be enrolled in his/her last year of medicine course

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • The student cannot perform 6th year rotations at the same time that courses from 4th and 5th years, since it is not possible to attribute a compatible timetable;
  • The beginning of the rotations must be mandatorily respected;
  • It is not possible to integrate a rotation already initiated or attend the same area in two or more different classes;
  • Transcript of Records:
    • We cannot issue this document in the framework of Erasmus + Placement or any other program related to the performing of internships;
    • Under Erasmus + Studies or any other program related to the performing of courses, it can be issued but the student has to complete all the rotation and perform the final exam;
    • In a practical context, similar to an internship, instead of a TR, the student will have access to an Assessment Report, which will include the number contact hours (previous informed and indicated in ICBAS Training Agreement) and the indication of “approved or not approved”, without the attribution of ECTS credits or grade.

In case of interest, as the number of places for each class is reduced and needs to be managed, the student must send a request in advance (mobilidade.in@icbas.up.pt) even before completing the online application, with the following data:

  • Full name;
  • Home University and Country;
  • Current academic degree or curricular year that is attending;
  • Date for graduation conclusion;
  • Rotation (s) of interest;
  • Mobility period (start and ending date).
