Basic ecological concepts applied to Agriculture. Divisions of Ecology and their rules. Liife time linee. Extinctions and risk of extinction. Evolution. Structure of DNA as current genetic material. Terrestrial environment. Soils and soil types. Water erosion. Terrestrial biomes. Aquatic Biomes. Forest resources in world and in Portugal. Climate and climate elements. CO2, global changes, and effect on agriculture. Water cycle. Uses of water and agriculture. Water and disease. Nitrogen, agriculture and environment. Agriculture concepts and agricultural systems. Main agricultural systems in Portugal. Knowledge of the plant. Fodder production. Forage Conservation. Haymaking. Artificial dehydration. Use of pastures
PRACTICAL classes
Granulometric study of different types of soils ( Douro, Porto, Jardim, Guinea-Bissau, Hypermarket mix). Nitrate dosing in different types of soils. Phosphate dosing in different types of soils. pH measurement in different types of soils. Chlorophyll a dosing in lemon tree, loquat, lettuce, leek, and herb leaves. Introduction to cartography. Preparation of distribution charts for agriculturally relevant data relating to mainland Portugal. Field work.
