The study of vascular plant morphology is the major objective of this curricular unit. In addition, plant reproduction and development, evolution, phylogeny and taxonomy are also studied. Students also should acquire basic knowledge about fungi, lichens and non-vascular plants (bryophytes).
Students should be able to identify all the tissues in histological sections of vascular plants, and recognize the primary and secondary structures of roots and stems. They should also acquire knowledge about reproduction and life cycles of vascular plants, their evolution, phylogeny and taxonomy. Additionally, students should obtain basic knowledge about the morphology, life cycles and taxonomy of fungi, lichens and bryophytes.
1) Fungi: general characterization, reproduction, life cycles andtaxonomy; the taxa Chytridiomycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Zygomycota, Glomeromycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. 2) Lichens: structure and reproduction, with reference to coastal species. 3) Bryophytes: general characteristics, life cycle and taxonomy. 4) Morphological and functional characterization of vascular plant tissues: epidermis, parenchyma, collenchyma, sclerenchyma, phloem and xylem. 5) Primary and secondary structure of the root and stem. 6) General structure of the leaves and its variations. 7) Reproductive structures in vascular plants: flower anatomy, inflorescences, fruits and embryonic development. 8) An introduction to plant taxonomy, evolution and phylogeny.
Theoretical classes; laboratory classes dedicated to the observation of fungi, lichens, non-vascular plants and microscopy slides with sections of vascular plant organs (roots, stems, leaves and flowers)
