Objectives

In the continuation of the unit of Histology and Embryology Comparative I provide theoretical and practical knowledge about the structure of cells, tissues and organs (now in recent emphasis), the microscopic level, particularly optics, but sometimes at TEM level, and the respective histophysiology. Thus, the bases of knowledge and skills promoted to a better understanding of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Pathology, etc. The practical component is based on the study of preparations of normal tissues and organs, directly to the optical microscope or indirectly, via his pictures taken by digital means.

It is also intended to demonstrate the importance of knowing and applying the normal histology of tissues and organs in the face of potential modifications of the same, as well as encourage students to make a morphofunctional integration of acquired knowledge and acquire, and use your creativity in interpretation of results of scientific projects, multidisciplinary components that histological or embryological.

Finally, we aim to teach complementary bases of general and special embryology, now with emphasis on the latest, encompassing aspects of descriptive and developmental biology and studies aiming to model organisms (vertebrates). It is intended to provide students with knowledge to understand the structure and the normal organogenesis and placement of organs and tissues in the adult animal. It is also intended that students have the ability to discern the possible events that may cause teratological changes.

Learning outcomes and competences

Having the ability to observe systematically describe the microscope and diagnose or before histological images, tissues and organs of vertebrates above (from fish to mammals), as well as to know predict / correlate its characteristics from histophysiology structural and dyeing.

It is intended that students obtain the basic principles of developmental biology and embryology descriptive, with an overview of embryological development in comparative terms, integrating this knowledge with the systematic anatomy and microanatomy of the adult. It is also intended that students have the ability to discern the possible events that may cause teratological cases.

Being aware of the importance of full implementation of whether the histology and embryology of normal tissues and organs in the face of potential changes therein. Enhance the student's ability to make a morphofunctional integration of acquired knowledge, and use your creativity in interpreting works that integrate histological component / embryological.

Increment of competence for the presentation and critical evaluation of issues related to Histology and Embryology Compared.

Eligibility for exams

In accordance with current regulations (see UPorto and ICBAS Rules), in particular, you must attend 3/4 of all practical classes taught.

The registration of attendance in theoretical classes will be taken into account for the purpose of adjusting the Participation grade (see Final Grade Calculation Formula).

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification is the following weighted average of 4 components:

Theoretical Exam x 0.35 + Practical Exam x 0.40 + Paper Presentation as Oral Communication x 0.20 x + Participation x 0.05

Each component is graded in the general scale of 0 to 20.

Participation, which rewards attendance, the level of commitment, and even the quality of performance of each student during the lessons, you can reach a maximum of 1 point (after ponderation). The article will be quoted up to 4 values (after ponderation).

The student will be approved if it can discipline the minimum values of 9.50, after applying the above formula.

Note 1: The minimum passing grade for the written exam (multiple choice) and for the practical test is f 9.5 points in each exam.

Note 2: students who do not participate in the presentation of scientific articles, without being for an unexpected and serious reason (illness, accident, etc.), will not only have their rankings on this component be of 0 points but also will have a 50% penalty on the grade for participation.

Examinations or Special Assignments

Critical presentation of one (1) paper (original and not a review paper) to include a component of Histology and / or embryology. This will be in the form of oral communication using appropriate audiovisual media.

In addition, students will have to design a Graphical Abstract, which can not be equal to a possible Graphic Summary that may be associated with the chosen article. The Graphic Summary will be delivered as a file, as a jpeg or tif image, with a landscape layout (for 4: 3 standard or 16: 9 widescreen display), with good resolution; deliveries that do not respect the indicated will be penalized. The Graphic Summary should be briefly explained in 1 minute additional to the oral presentation.

The duration of each presentation is 10 minutes, followed by 5 to 10 minutes of discussion. The students who make presentations in English will have a bonus of up to 25% of the grade of the Papers (ie, until further 5 out of 20).

Work will be performed in groups, of 5 to 6 students (3 to 4 groups / class), being drawn at the time of presentation which group member will present the work. It will also be raffled the student who will make the presentation of the Graphic Summary. Students not chosen for presenters will be called to answer any questions.

Students will do a self-assessment of their level of participation in the preparation of articles (grading themselves between 0% and 100%). The auto-evaluation is delivered to the course coordinator by the representative of the group. The final grade can be different for the diverse members of the group.

The presentation of the article will be made for all students in a single session, scheduled by the Regent, seeking to meet the preferences of students.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Special examination will be available to all students who have legally entitled to it, on a date to be announced by the Regent, in accordance with the practice in force in ICBAS. Note however that any particular exae (T or TP) can be of a different nature from that applied in normal time or resource (eg, having a lower extension may be oral character, etc.).

Classification improvement

After approval the course, the student may apply for grade improvement.

The student may eventually make improvements to only one of the tests, the theoretical or practical; the coordinator always takes the best combination of the best grades obtained at different times. The improvement process for the articles implies that the student return to integrate into a new working group (of a next school year). After approval can not improve "Participation".

Observations

If the student does not get final approval in a given school year, the grades achieved in the various partial evaluation components may transit times to and / or following school years, a situation that must be confirmed with the conductor at the beginning of each school year. However, the Regent reserves the right not to take previous effort where there is no possibility of recovery, given the changes taking place in the type of course evaluation. If there is partial transport notes, the student is subject to the evaluation formula of the current school year.

At a certain time of examinations, the student graduates may choose to perform one final exam (the theoretical or theoretical-practical), BUT IT IS REQUIRED TO RESPOND TO SURVEY OF REGISTRATION THAT THE COORDINATOR MAY IMPLEMENT.
