Provide insight into the methods and techniques to use in water and wastewater treatment. Provide capabilities to define appropriate interventions and consider decision making in the assessment, design, planning, construction, operation and maintenance of municipal sewage and industrial wastewater treatment operations and water for urban supply.
To allow the development of a scientific and technological understanding of the treatment processes of water and wastewater.
Having successfully completed the module, you will be able to: Know how water and wasterwater treatment plants operate; Simple design equations for water and wastewater treatment plant; Select the correct series of unit processes for a particular water and wastewater type; Adapt and use in the correct context design equations for the design and operation of wastewater treatment plant; Critically analyse problems that may arise in the operation of water and wastewater treatment plant; Formulate approaches to treat water and wastewater in the most cost effective manner; Formulate approches for the management of residuals from water and wastewater treatment operations.
Theoretical lessons: Approach of themes will be covered in lectures supported by audiovisual media (video projection and slides) and a classroom whiteboard. Some lessons are previously recorded on a web platform (e-learning). Specific topics may be supplemented with guest speakers.
Theoretical-practical lessons: Solving of hydraulic (design, planning and management) problems. Discussion of scientific articles relevant to the lecture theme.
Practical lessons: Focus on experimental work in ICBAS laboratories. Visits to water and wastewater treatment stations.
Note: Additional support outside the classroom, using the SIGARRA and MOODLE platform from University of Porto, providing static or dynamic information, for self-study and self-assessment.

With 3/4 attendance in all classes
A - Exam grade: 70%; B - Creative homework (seminar/project): 15%; C - Oral presentation of the creative homework: 10%; D - Attendance: 5%
Final score: A x 0.70 + B x 0.15 + C x 0.10 + D x 0.05. Minimum score to be achieved in the examination: 8.0 This criterion applies both to the normal and make-up exams.
Note: Exam (covers all themes lectures from the first to last class: combination of multiple choice, true or false, short answer and short-essay questions covering the all course and is closed-book, closed-notes). Failure to perform the creative homework imply the assignment of zero values to these elements of evaluation.
